Delhi’s air quality saw a significant boost in April 2024, recording the best figures for the month in the past six years, according to official data. The city achieved a record number of days rated as ‘Good to Moderate’ in air quality, a stark contrast to the same period in previous years, with the exception of 2020 which was affected by a lockdown.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) surpassed 200 on only seven occasions in April, indicating a considerable decrease in pollution levels compared to earlier years. Additionally, the monthly average AQI was notably low, making this April the second-best since 2018 in terms of air quality.
Experts attribute this improvement to effective pollution control measures implemented by authorities and favorable meteorological conditions. The reduction in daily average concentrations of particulate matter, specifically PM2.5 and PM10, also played a crucial role in enhancing air quality. PM2.5 and PM10 are airborne particles small enough to penetrate the lungs and cause significant health issues, thus their decreased levels are a positive indicator for public health.
