  • NHRC seeks detailed report from Maharashtra police in TCS Nashik case

The National Human Rights Commission has sought detailed reports from the Maharashtra police leadership, including the Director General of Police, in connection with serious allegations emerging from the Tata Consultancy Services Nashik unit, where multiple complaints of harassment and coercion have triggered a wide-ranging investigation and intensified scrutiny at both institutional and legal levels.

The case has drawn nationwide attention due to the scale of allegations, involvement of multiple accused, and the intervention of rights bodies, while parallel legal developments, including an anticipatory bail plea by one of the accused, have added further complexity to the ongoing probe and its potential implications.

NHRC Intervention and Expanding Investigation

The intervention by the National Human Rights Commission marks a significant escalation in oversight, as the body has formally sought reports from key departments to assess the nature of allegations and the response of authorities in handling complaints raised by women employees at the Nashik facility of Tata Consultancy Services.

The complaints involve allegations of sexual harassment, inappropriate conduct, and pressure linked to religious practices, with incidents reportedly spanning several years between 2022 and 2026, raising concerns about workplace safety, institutional accountability, and grievance redressal mechanisms.

Following the complaints, police registered nine FIRs against eight accused individuals, indicating the scale and seriousness of the allegations, while a Special Investigation Team has been constituted to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into all aspects of the case, including patterns of misconduct and possible systemic lapses.

So far, seven accused have been arrested, including multiple employees and one female staff member associated with administrative functions, while investigations continue to trace the role of remaining individuals and verify claims made by complainants.

Anticipatory Bail Plea and Defence Claims

Amid the ongoing investigation, absconding accused Nida Khan has approached the court seeking anticipatory bail, citing her pregnancy as a key ground for relief, bringing additional attention to her role in the case and prompting further legal scrutiny.

Her family has strongly denied all allegations, describing the case as a conspiracy and claiming that she has been falsely implicated without direct involvement in the incidents described by complainants, while also asserting that she had no interaction with the individuals who have filed complaints.

According to statements attributed to family members, the allegations are being linked to unrelated disputes, with claims that the case is being used to target her through misrepresentation of facts, and they have categorically rejected accusations of forced conversion or harassment.

Her legal counsel has also contested the charges, arguing that the FIR does not substantiate claims of forced religious conversion and that her portrayal as a central figure in the case is not supported by the documented complaints, raising questions about the extent of her alleged involvement.

The anticipatory bail plea is expected to play a critical role in determining the legal trajectory of the case, as the court evaluates both the seriousness of allegations and the circumstances presented by the accused.

Workplace Allegations, Corporate Response, and Government Stand

The allegations under investigation include claims of repeated harassment, inappropriate physical contact, coercion through false promises, and religious pressure, with some complainants alleging that they were subjected to humiliation and compelled to participate in specific religious practices, while also stating that complaints made to senior officials were not acted upon.

In response to the controversy, Tata Consultancy Services reportedly suspended Nida Khan shortly after the allegations surfaced, disabled her system access, and initiated internal protocols, reflecting the seriousness with which the matter is being treated within the organization.

The company has also taken precautionary measures, including directing employees at the Nashik unit to work from home, indicating concerns over workplace environment and operational continuity amid the ongoing investigation.

At the state level, Devendra Fadnavis has described the case as extremely serious, stating that authorities are examining the possibility of an organized network behind the allegations, and has assured that all individuals found responsible will face strict action.

He further indicated that central agencies are also assisting in the investigation, suggesting a multi-layered probe that extends beyond local law enforcement, and reinforcing the government’s position on ensuring accountability in cases involving workplace misconduct and alleged rights violations.

The convergence of police investigation, human rights scrutiny, corporate response, and political attention underscores the complexity of the case, which continues to evolve as new details emerge and legal proceedings progress.
