M.S. Swaminathan, born Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan on August 7, 1925, is an Indian agronomist, agricultural scientist, plant geneticist, administrator, and humanitarian. He is a global leader of the Green Revolution has been called the Main architect of the Green Revolution in India for his leadership and role in introducing and further developing high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice.
Swaminathan was born in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. He received his bachelor’s degree in botany from the University of Madras in 1945, and his master’s degree in agriculture from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in 1949. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. in plant genetics from the University of Cambridge in 1952.
After returning to India, Swaminathan worked as a research scientist at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. In 1959, he was appointed Director of the Wheat Research Station in Karnal, Haryana. It was here that he developed the high-yielding varieties of wheat that helped to usher in the Green Revolution in India.
In 1966, Swaminathan was appointed Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). He served in this position until 1972, during which time he oversaw the development and implementation of the Green Revolution in India. The Green Revolution led to a dramatic increase in agricultural production in India, and helped to alleviate hunger and poverty in the country.
After leaving ICAR, Swaminathan served as Principal Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation from 1979 to 1980. He then served as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) from 1982 to 1988. During his time at IRRI, he helped to develop high-yielding varieties of rice that have been planted by farmers all over the world.
Swaminathan is a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, the World Food Prize, and the Albert Einstein World Award of Science. He is also a member of several prestigious scientific academies, including the Royal Society of London and the US National Academy of Sciences.
