Closing arguments in Donald Trump’s hush money trial unfolded on Tuesday, presenting contrasting narratives to the jury as they prepare to deliberate the first felony case involving a former American president. The prosecution asserted that Donald Trump engaged in a conspiracy to deceive voters during the 2016 presidential campaign, framing the case as a matter of conspiracy and cover-up. In contrast, the defence vehemently defended Donald Trump’s innocence and assailed the credibility of the prosecution’s star witness.
Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass emphasized the alleged conspiracy and cover-up, stressing the significance of the evidence presented to the jury. He underscored the importance of witness credibility while acknowledging the discomfort associated with some aspects of Stormy Daniels’ testimony. However, Joshua Steinglass argued that her story served to reinforce Donald Trump’s motive to silence her.
In response, defence lawyer Todd Blanche vehemently defended Donald Trump’s innocence, dismissing the credibility of both Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyer involved in the hush money payments. Todd Blanche urged the jury to acquit Donald Trump, emphasizing the prosecution’s failure to meet the burden of proof.
The trial, which spanned over four weeks, presented a historically unprecedented challenge for the jury as they considered 34 felony counts against Donald Trump. The proceedings were marked by political undertones, with President Joe Biden’s campaign staging an event outside the courthouse, underscoring the significance of the case.
While Joshua Steinglass sought to bolster Michael Cohen’s credibility as a key witness, Todd Blanche countered by questioning Michael Cohen’s integrity and motives, labelling him as the “greatest liar of all time.” Todd Blanche argued that Michael Cohen’s testimony lacked credibility and reliability, urging the jury to scrutinize his account.
The case centred on allegations that Donald Trump and his allies conspired to suppress potentially damaging stories during the 2016 campaign through hush money payments, including to Stormy Daniels. Despite the salacious nature of the allegations, the charges focused on fraudulent reimbursements signed by Donald Trump for the payments.
