United States President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of visiting India next year, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi “a great man” and “a friend,” amid heightened trade negotiations and Washington’s recent decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods. Donald Trump’s remarks, made during a White House press briefing, have sparked renewed interest in the future of India-US relations as both nations navigate a complex economic and geopolitical landscape. His statement suggests a potential thaw in ties after months of strain caused by tariffs and disagreements over India’s purchase of Russian oil.

Donald Trump praises Modi, signals intent to visit India

Speaking to reporters after unveiling a new healthcare initiative aimed at lowering the cost of weight loss drugs in the United States, Donald Trump said that discussions with Prime Minister Modi were “going great.” He indicated that his administration and New Delhi were in close contact on a range of issues, including trade, energy cooperation, and defense. “He (PM Modi) largely stopped buying from Russia. And he is a friend of mine, and we speak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a great man. He is a friend of mine, and we speak and he wants me to go there. We will figure that out, I will go… Prime Minister Modi is a great man and I will be going,” Donald Trump said, when asked whether a visit to India was being planned.

When pressed by reporters for a confirmation, Donald Trump added, “It could be, yes,” signaling that a trip to India could be on his 2026 diplomatic agenda. His remarks come at a time when the bilateral relationship between the two countries is being tested by trade disputes and energy concerns, yet remains rooted in strategic cooperation across multiple sectors.

The comment marks a striking shift from earlier reports that suggested the US President had no plans to visit India in 2025 for the Quad Summit. According to a report published in August, Donald Trump had dropped the idea of visiting India following Washington’s imposition of tariffs and a tense phone call with Modi. However, his recent statements at the White House suggest that diplomatic channels between the two leaders remain open and active.

During the briefing, which was briefly interrupted after a company representative fainted, Donald Trump continued to underscore the importance of India as a strategic partner. White House officials later confirmed that the medical emergency was minor and the event resumed shortly afterward.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later reiterated Donald Trump’s commitment to deepening India-US ties. She said, “The President feels very strongly about the India-US relationship. A few weeks ago, he spoke to Prime Minister Modi directly while celebrating Diwali in the Oval Office with several Indian-American officials.” The symbolic gesture of celebrating Diwali at the White House once again highlighted the administration’s efforts to reach out to the Indian diaspora, which remains an influential constituency in American politics.

Donald Trump’s latest comments also appear to be part of a broader diplomatic effort to mend and enhance relations with India after months of uncertainty. His public praise of Modi, coupled with the hint of a high-profile visit, reflects Washington’s recognition of India’s growing importance in global trade, technology, and strategic affairs.

Tariffs, Russian oil, and a recalibration of trade relations

The remarks by Donald Trump come amid a prolonged phase of trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington. The imposition of a 50 per cent tariff—along with an additional 25 per cent duty—by the US on Indian exports has been a major point of contention. The decision was justified by Washington as a response to India’s continued purchase of discounted crude oil from Russia despite global sanctions.

Donald Trump, while speaking at the briefing, praised India for significantly reducing its energy dependence on Moscow and described the country as being “very good” on the issue. “He (Modi) largely stopped buying from Russia,” Donald Trump said, signaling approval of New Delhi’s gradual alignment with Western energy policies. His tone suggested that the tariff move was not a punitive step but part of a broader negotiation process that could pave the way for a new trade framework between the two democracies.

The United States has maintained that its tariff decisions were driven by national interests and aimed at ensuring fair competition. However, Indian officials have consistently emphasized that the country’s energy sourcing policies are guided by domestic priorities and consumer welfare. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi reiterated earlier this month that India’s import decisions were based solely on economic considerations and were not influenced by external political pressure.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India, as a major importer of oil and gas, has always prioritized the interests of its citizens in an increasingly volatile global energy market. “It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario. Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective,” he said. He added that India continues to expand its energy cooperation with the US, a process that has seen steady growth over the last decade.

Trade experts believe that the tariff standoff could eventually lead to a more comprehensive trade pact between the two countries, addressing long-standing issues such as market access, intellectual property rights, and technology exports. The ongoing negotiations are also expected to revisit the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which previously allowed duty-free access to several Indian goods before being suspended by the US.

Donald Trump’s remarks therefore serve a dual purpose—signaling a willingness to rebuild trust while maintaining a firm stance on trade fairness. His repeated reference to Modi as “a great man” and “a friend” reflects an understanding that personal diplomacy has often played a pivotal role in India-US relations. Both leaders have cultivated a public image of mutual respect and camaraderie, which continues to influence policy-level interactions between their governments.

As part of this evolving dynamic, the US administration is also expected to push for deeper defense collaboration with India under the Indo-Pacific framework. The strategic importance of New Delhi in balancing China’s growing influence remains a cornerstone of Washington’s foreign policy in the region. Donald Trump’s proposed visit, if it materializes, could reinforce this partnership through new defense, trade, and technology agreements.

Meanwhile, in domestic political circles in Washington, the announcement of potential travel plans has generated considerable interest. Analysts suggest that a successful visit to India could strengthen Donald Trump’s foreign policy credentials ahead of the upcoming US elections, particularly among the influential Indian-American community.

At the same time, the invitation from Modi and Donald Trump’s willingness to consider the visit demonstrate that both sides are eager to restore momentum to a relationship that has faced turbulence in recent months. The India-US partnership has historically been one of mutual benefit, grounded in shared democratic values and converging economic interests. Despite periodic disagreements, both countries recognize that cooperation is essential in areas ranging from defense and counterterrorism to energy and technology.

The upcoming months are likely to see more high-level exchanges and policy consultations between the two sides as they work to finalize trade and tariff-related agreements. Officials in both capitals remain optimistic that a visit by President Donald Trump to India in 2026 could serve as a symbolic reset, reaffirming the strategic importance of one of the world’s most consequential bilateral relationships.

If realized, the visit could mark a significant diplomatic milestone, setting the stage for renewed trade collaboration, joint defense ventures, and expanded energy partnerships. For now, Donald Trump’s comments have opened the door to a new chapter in India-US relations—one that promises both challenges and opportunities as the two nations navigate a rapidly changing global order.
