New Delhi, 29 August : Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court again deferred the verdict in the 1984 Sultanpuri anti-Sikh riot case against former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the national capital. Special Judge Geetanjali Goyal on Tuesday ordered the verdict on the matter to be pronounced on September 15.
Earlier, the court had postponed the verdict on August 11 and July 25 as well. The case was transferred by the Patiala House Court to the Rouse Avenue Court. The order to register this case was given by the Nanavati Commission formed to investigate the anti-Sikh riots. On November 16, 2018, the main witness in the case, Cham Kaur, identified Sajjan Kumar, who was present in the Patiala House Court.
Cham Kaur had alleged on September 20, 2018 that she was being prevented from testifying in court by threatening her with dire consequences. He had filed a petition in the Patiala House Court seeking his protection. Cham had said that on the night of September 19, people of former Congress MLA Jai Kishan of Delhi’s Sultanpur Majra came to his house and threatened him. Also lured money.
After this, on March 28, 2019, Joginder Singh told the Patiala House Court that Sajjan Kumar led the mob and incited it. Joginder had said that when he reached the police station to register the FIR, the police refused to mention Sajjan Kumar’s name. Joginder had said that his brother was killed in the riots.
Sajjan Kumar is lodged in Delhi’s Mandoli Jail after being convicted in another anti-Sikh riots case. Sajjan Kumar surrendered on December 31, 2018 in Delhi’s Karkardooma Court.
