As the IPL 2025 season progresses, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have taken an unexpected lead, sitting comfortably at the top of the points table after winning their first two matches. However, their strong start hasn’t gone unnoticed, with former India cricketer Virender Sehwag taking a playful jab at the franchise. In a recent video, Sehwag mocked RCB by calling them “gareeb” (poor), highlighting the team’s lack of IPL title wins despite their high position in the standings.
Sehwag, known for his fiery comments, made his remarks during a conversation on Cricbuzz. He quipped that RCB, often seen as underachievers in the IPL, should enjoy their moment at the top of the points table, but questioned how long it would last. He said, “Gareebon ko bhi toh rehne de, photo le le thodi der. Pata nahi kitnin der gareeb log upar rahenge,” which roughly translates to, “Let the poor stay at the top for now, let them take photos. Who knows how long they’ll remain there.”
His comment was clearly directed at franchises that have yet to win an IPL title, and he clarified that he wasn’t referring to the financial situation of these teams. Sehwag pointed out that all the IPL franchises are financially strong, earning hundreds of crores each season. Instead, his “gareeb” comment was aimed at teams that have yet to lift the coveted IPL trophy.
RCB, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants are the franchises that have yet to win an IPL title. While LSG is a relatively new addition to the league, having joined in 2022, RCB’s struggles to claim the trophy have been well-documented over the years. Despite boasting some of the biggest names in world cricket, the team has consistently fallen short in the tournament, leading to Sehwag’s lighthearted yet pointed remarks.
The franchise’s strong start to the 2025 season has certainly caught the attention of fans and critics alike, and Sehwag’s teasing only adds to the growing tension and anticipation surrounding RCB’s performance this year. While the team is enjoying their success at the moment, only time will tell if they can finally break their IPL title drought or if they will once again fall short of their goal.
