New Delhi, January 21, 2026:
In keeping with its commitment to celebrate the Statehood Days of Indian states with dignity and grandeur, the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi on Tuesday organized a grand समारोह at the Delhi Secretariat to mark the Statehood Days of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura. The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of Northeast India and conveyed a strong message of national unity through folk dance and music.
The celebration was part of an initiative announced by the Delhi government in February 2025, under which the Statehood Days of various states are being observed at the capital to honour India’s cultural diversity and strengthen inter-state cultural dialogue. Officials said the objective of the programme was to bring the traditions, folk culture and artistic legacy of different regions closer to the national audience.
Chief Minister’s Greetings Open the Programme
The programme began with a message of warm greetings on the occasion of the Statehood Days from Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. In her message, she extended best wishes to the people of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura and highlighted the importance of recognising the contribution of northeastern states to India’s cultural and social fabric.
Senior officials from the Department of Art, Culture and Language, along with cultural functionaries and invited guests, were present at the event.
Vibrant Cultural Performances from Northeast India
The cultural segment of the programme was curated by Sahitya Kala Parishad, which presented a series of vibrant performances based on the traditional folk dances and folk music of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura. Two cultural troupes from each of the three states took part in the event.
The artists, dressed in traditional attire, performed expressive dance forms accompanied by indigenous music and instruments. Their performances reflected the unique cultural identities, customs and folk traditions of the northeastern region. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause, as the performances offered a colourful and immersive glimpse into the cultural diversity of Northeast India.
Message of National Unity
Addressing the gathering, Delhi’s Minister for Art, Culture and Language Kapil Mishra said that Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura represent the soul of India’s cultural diversity. He emphasized that the folk traditions, dances and music of the northeastern states play a vital role in strengthening the unity and integrity of the nation.
Kapil Mishra stated that such cultural programmes go beyond celebration and entertainment. “Events like these reinforce national unity and also contribute significantly to the preservation and promotion of India’s rich cultural heritage,” he said. He added that showcasing the culture of different states in the national capital helps build greater understanding and respect among people from diverse regions.
Promoting Cultural Dialogue Among States
Officials from the Department of Art, Culture and Language said the event was designed to encourage cultural dialogue and foster a sense of shared heritage among states. By bringing together artists from Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on a single platform, the programme aimed to highlight the idea of “unity in diversity” that defines India.
The department reiterated that similar celebrations would continue to be organized in the future, featuring other states and regions of the country, so that citizens can gain deeper exposure to India’s vast cultural landscape.
A Meaningful Cultural Initiative
Participants and attendees described the event as a meaningful and timely initiative. Many noted that such programmes not only honour the cultural identities of individual states but also help integrate regional traditions into the national consciousness.
The celebration at the Delhi Secretariat concluded on a positive note, with officials emphasizing that India’s strength lies in its cultural plurality. The Statehood Day event of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura was seen as a successful step toward recognising that diversity and reinforcing bonds of national unity through art, culture and shared heritage.
