Light rainfall brought a much-needed respite to Delhi and its neighboring areas on Thursday, following a prolonged and severe heatwave that gripped the region for over a month.
The rainfall, which occurred across various parts of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, was welcomed by residents who took to social media to express their relief. “First rain droplets in Delhi-NCR, 20.06.2024. Hope it pours also,” wrote one user on X, reflecting the widespread sentiment of hope for further showers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted light to moderate intensity rain accompanied by gusty winds in many places across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. This weather pattern is expected to persist through the day, providing additional relief from the scorching heat.
The capital city recorded a maximum temperature of 43.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, which was significantly above normal. The minimum temperature, too, remained high at 35.2 degrees Celsius, the highest for June since 1969.
During the heatwave period, hospitals reported a surge in cases of heatstroke and heat exhaustion, with several fatalities. Government-run hospitals like Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital treated numerous patients, emphasizing the severity of the weather conditions.
In response to the extreme weather, Union Health Minister JP Nadda reviewed the heatwave situation and directed the establishment of special heatwave units in central government hospitals.
While the immediate forecast offers relief with expected rainfall, IMD also noted favorable conditions for the advancement of the Southwest Monsoon in North India, which had been delayed. The monsoon’s progression is anticipated to bring further relief to the region in the coming days.
The recent weather developments underscore the unpredictable nature of climate patterns and the critical importance of preparedness in mitigating their impact on public health and infrastructure.
As residents await more rain, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the well-being of the populace amidst varying climatic conditions.
