In the midst of escalating tensions and a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Qatar said they are committed to spearhead unwavering efforts, both regionally and internationally, to broker a cease-fire ahead of Eid Al Fitr. Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscored the urgency of the situation during a media briefing on March 12.
Expressing regret over the failure to secure a truce before the onset of Ramadan, Dr. Al Ansari emphasized the critical need for de-escalation to prevent further loss of life and enable the people of Gaza to observe the holy month without the specter of daily violence looming over them.
Highlighting Qatar’s persistent engagement with all stakeholders involved, Dr. Al Ansari reiterated the country’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and mediation efforts without exerting undue pressure on any party. Qatar remains steadfast in its pursuit of an agreement that fosters peace and stability in the region, he affirmed.
Among Qatar’s initiatives to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is the proposal to establish a port to facilitate aid delivery into the territory. Dr. Al Ansari stressed Qatar’s longstanding support for efforts to provide essential assistance to Gaza, emphasizing the rising need for aid across the region.
While Qatar supports the sea route proposal for aid delivery, Dr. Al Ansari emphasized that it should complement, not replace, the existing land corridors that are vital for humanitarian access. Qatar stands ready to contribute to relief efforts through this initiative, pending further deliberation on logistical and technical aspects, he added.
Further, Dr. Al Ansari also highlighted Qatar’s extensive diplomatic outreach, including high-level meetings with UK officials and intensive communications with international counterparts. These discussions have centered on the imperative of ending hostilities, facilitating aid delivery, and halting the bloodshed in Gaza.
