  • Hamdard accuses Ramdev of hate speech over Rooh Afza comment.
  • Court slams Ramdev’s "sharbat jihad" remark as deeply offensive.

The Controversy Surrounding ‘Sharbat Jihad’ In a shocking turn of events, the Delhi High Court has strongly condemned Baba Ramdev’s controversial “Sharbat Jihad” remark, which was made while promoting Patanjali’s rose sharbat. Justice Amit Bansal, who was hearing the suit filed by Hamdard against the yoga guru, termed Ramdev’s comment as “indefensible,” expressing that it had shocked the court’s conscience. The case revolves around Baba Ramdev’s disparaging remarks about Hamdard’s popular drink, Rooh Afza, which led to the company filing a lawsuit seeking the removal of Ramdev’s promotional content from social media platforms.

The controversy ignited when Baba Ramdev, in an advertisement promoting his brand’s rose sharbat, made a claim that the profits from the sale of Rooh Afza were being used to fund the construction of madrasas and mosques. Ramdev further drew a parallel between Rooh Afza and the concept of “love jihad,” calling the beverage a form of “sharbat jihad.” He added that drinking Patanjali’s rose sharbat would help in building “gurukuls” and support the growth of Patanjali University and the Bharatiya Shiksha Board.

Hamdard Files Legal Action Against Ramdev’s Remarks
In response to Ramdev’s controversial statements, Hamdard, the maker of Rooh Afza, filed a lawsuit against the yoga guru, seeking the removal of his ad videos from social media. The company’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, stated that Ramdev’s comments went far beyond damaging the reputation of Rooh Afza. The lawyer argued that the remarks made by Ramdev were not only disparaging but also deeply communal, alleging that they aimed to divide communities. According to Rohatgi, the comments amounted to hate speech and were a deliberate attempt to promote religious intolerance.

Ramdev, on the other hand, defended his remarks by stating that he did not specifically name any brand or community, implying that his comments were directed solely at Rooh Afza without any broader intent. However, the court appeared unconvinced by this defense and criticized the yoga guru for his remarks.

Court’s Stance on ‘Sharbat Jihad’ Remark
The Delhi High Court’s strong reaction to Baba Ramdev’s statement signals its disapproval of the language used by public figures in promoting their brands. Justice Amit Bansal made it clear that such remarks have no place in public discourse, particularly when they could potentially incite communal tensions. The court’s remarks highlight the need for greater responsibility and accountability for individuals with significant public influence, especially when their statements can impact social harmony.

Hamdard’s legal battle against Baba Ramdev continues to unfold in the courts, and the outcome will likely have broader implications on the boundaries of free speech and the responsibilities of public figures in India. With the case still in progress, it remains to be seen how the judiciary will ultimately handle this delicate issue of communal remarks and brand promotion.
