Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Indraj meets community representatives; assures continued efforts for empowerment and social justice
New Delhi, December 12, 2025: Delhi Government’s Minister for Social Welfare, SC/ST/OBC Welfare, Cooperation and Elections, Ravindra Indraj Singh, on Thursday held an interaction with representatives of Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic communities at the Delhi Secretariat, reaffirming the government’s commitment to recognising their historical contributions and strengthening efforts for their social and economic empowerment.
During the meeting, representatives from various organisations shared suggestions and concerns related to improving the living standards, rights and welfare of Denotified (DNT), Nomadic (NT) and Semi-Nomadic (SNT) communities. Issues discussed included access to basic facilities, livelihood support, education and timely delivery of welfare benefits.
Addressing the gathering, Ravindra Indraj said the Delhi Government is determined to give full respect and recognition to the heroes and icons of these communities and to ensure that their contributions are passed on to future generations. He said that just as the government organised a state-level event to commemorate the birth anniversary of Veerangana Jhalkari Bai, it is now actively considering holding a grand celebration in Delhi on the birth anniversary of Baba Lakhi Shah Banjara as well.
“The government welcomes all constructive suggestions related to honouring the legacy of such great personalities. Our aim is to ensure that the sacrifices and contributions of these heroes are not forgotten and that they inspire the younger generation,” the minister said.
Highlighting the legacy of Baba Lakhi Shah Banjara, Ravindra Indraj said he was not only a trader but also a civil contractor, transporter and a renowned social worker who provided employment to lakhs of people. He played a significant role in settling several villages in Delhi, including Raisina, Narela, Barahkhamba and Malcha. Baba Lakhi Shah Banjara is also remembered for risking his life to perform the last rites of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib with full honour at a time when fear prevailed, the minister said.
The interaction saw an in-depth discussion on several key issues concerning the welfare and rights of DNT, NT and SNT communities in Delhi. Community representatives raised demands related to the timely issuance of caste and identity certificates, the formation of a dedicated development board, protection of housing and temporary shelters, and initiatives to promote traditional occupations.
Among the major suggestions was the establishment of ‘Haat Bazaars’ to provide a platform for traditional artisans and workers to sell their products and sustain their livelihoods. The representatives also stressed the need to expand scholarship schemes, hostel facilities and coaching support for students from these communities to ensure better access to education and competitive opportunities.
The minister assured the representatives that the Delhi Government remains committed to advancing the cause of social justice and empowerment for Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic communities. He said the government will continue to work in close coordination with stakeholders to address their concerns and ensure that welfare schemes reach beneficiaries in a timely and effective manner.
“The upliftment of these communities is a priority for the Delhi Government. We will make sustained efforts to ensure their inclusion in the development process and provide them with equal opportunities in education, employment and social security,” Ravindra Indraj said.
He added that suggestions received during the meeting would be examined seriously and appropriate steps would be taken in consultation with concerned departments to strengthen policy interventions for these communities.
The meeting was attended by representatives from various organisations, including DNT Development Foundation secretary Dharmbir Singh Gurjar, Kavita Rathore, advocate Anju Tanwar, and Surendra Singh Rathore, coordinator of the Akhil Bharatiya Lakhera Samaj Seva Sangathan, along with other members of the organisations.
The interaction marked another step in the Delhi Government’s efforts to engage directly with marginalised communities, understand their challenges and work towards inclusive development while ensuring dignity, recognition and social justice for all.
