The Defence Ministry is preparing to approve military acquisitions worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore in a crucial upcoming meeting, marking its first major procurement decision following Operation Sindoor. This extensive approval will cover key defence systems, including advanced missile regiments, reconnaissance aircraft, naval mines, and upgrades for frontline fighter jets, aimed at significantly enhancing the operational capabilities of India’s armed forces.
Major Acquisition Proposals Under Review
Among the proposals awaiting approval are three new regiments of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system designed to boost India’s air defence along the western border with Pakistan. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), these missile systems will be produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited. Their deployment is expected to strengthen the Indian Army’s ability to counter aerial threats swiftly and efficiently.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is expected to advance its plans to procure three spy planes under the Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting, and Reconnaissance (I-STAR) programme. These aircraft will be sourced from original equipment manufacturers and subsequently modified by the DRDO’s Centre for Airborne Systems in collaboration with private sector partners. These advanced planes will play a critical role in the Air Force’s strategy to identify and neutralize ground targets, enhancing India’s surveillance and strike capabilities.
Enhancements for Navy and Fighter Jets
The Indian Navy is also slated to propose the induction of Pressure-Based Moored Mines, an underwater defence technology developed by DRDO, specifically designed to detect and neutralize enemy submarines and surface vessels. This addition will reinforce India’s maritime security and deterrence capabilities.
In parallel, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) will review the upgrade programme for 84 Su-30MKI fighter jets. These upgrades, already granted initial approval, aim to modernize the fleet with advanced avionics, weaponry, and systems to maintain the jets’ combat edge. Furthermore, the DAC will evaluate proposals for acquiring underwater autonomous vessels, a key step toward enhancing the Navy’s capabilities in unmanned underwater warfare.
This acquisition meeting represents a significant stride in modernizing India’s defence infrastructure following the strategic imperatives highlighted by Operation Sindoor, reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthening national security through cutting-edge technology and indigenous development.
