Tensions between India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress party have intensified following a social media post by Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, a former Pakistani minister. The post, which lauded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent speech, featured the caption “Rahul on fire,” leading to sharp rebukes from BJP leaders.
Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP’s IT cell, criticized the endorsement by highlighting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain’s previous position as Minister for Information and Broadcasting in Imran Khan’s cabinet. Amit Malviya questioned the Congress party’s connections with Pakistan, suggesting the opposition might be seeking electoral favor across the border. “Is the Congress planning to contest election in Pakistan?” Amit Malviya posted, referencing a supposed historical link between Congress policies and those favored by Pakistan.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala further accused the Congress of maintaining ties with Pakistan, citing past incidents and comments by other figures that suggested a preference for Congress by Pakistani interests. “Congress ka haath Pakistan ke saath,” Shehzad Poonawala claimed, translating to “Congress’s hand with Pakistan,” as he listed various instances he viewed as evidence of these connections.
In the video shared by Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, Rahul Gandhi is seen criticizing the BJP’s policies and its handling of social issues, particularly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the inauguration of the Ram Mandir and its implications for marginalized communities.
The BJP has used the incident to assert a narrative of national security and loyalty, questioning Congress’s domestic and international alignments ahead of upcoming electoral contests. The incident has further polarized the already fraught political landscape in India, as each party positions itself ahead of future elections.
