Since acquiring Twitter in 2022, Elon Musk has championed the platform, now rebranded as X, as a bastion of free expression. Over the course of 2024, however, X has undergone a dramatic transformation, evolving from a communal digital town square into a highly polarized hub of controversial content. The platform has seen the rise of profiles that share provocative and often misleading takes on politics and news, sparking debates about its role in shaping global political discourse.
X’s influence extends beyond its user base, which is smaller compared to other social media giants. It remains a significant platform for political discussions, used by high-profile politicians, governments, and public figures to share statements and opinions. Musk’s alignment with Donald Trump has further underscored X’s evolving role in political strategy, raising questions about the relationships between social media executives and political leaders ahead of the next U.S. presidential election.
A striking example of this evolution is the rise of profiles like “Inevitable West.” This account, which promotes itself as a “Defender of Western values and culture,” gained 131,600 followers in just two months and now garners approximately 30 million daily views. Posts by Inevitable West include sensational and often misleading content, such as a doctored video of Trump threatening to “invade” the UK. Other posts support far-right figures like Tommy Robinson or propagate debunked claims about incidents like the UK farmer protests and a fabricated knife attack during a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop.
The account’s creator, who claims to be part of Gen Z, argues that their content provides a voice for the “silent majority” of the Western world and challenges mainstream media narratives. Despite accusations of spreading disinformation and inciting violence, the creator denies any wrongdoing, asserting that “uncensored information” will push Western nations further toward right-wing ideologies.
Under Musk’s ownership, X has undergone sweeping changes, from mass layoffs to revamped moderation policies. The platform has shifted from stringent controls on political misinformation to a more hands-off approach. Musk introduced features like algorithmically curated feeds under a “For You” section, resembling TikTok, and the traditional “Following” feed. This redesign has altered how users interact with content, amplifying controversial voices and narratives.
Musk’s vision of empowering users to become the “media” is emblematic of X’s transformation. While the platform’s embrace of free expression has won praise from some, its polarizing content and relaxed moderation policies have intensified debates about social media’s role in amplifying divisive narratives and reshaping the information landscape.
