Amid recent electoral setbacks in Lok Sabha, Delhi, Haryana, and Maharashtra, the Congress leadership in Kerala exuded confidence in its ability to defeat what it termed as “oppressive and communal fronts” in the state. In a high-level meeting on Friday, party leaders engaged in a strategic discussion ahead of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, with a strong emphasis on unity and discipline within the party.
Among those present at the brainstorming session was Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, whose recent statements had fueled speculation about a rift between him and the senior leadership. Despite his repeated clarifications, Tharoor’s remarks, particularly his praise of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government’s efforts in improving Kerala’s investment climate, had triggered sharp reactions within the party. The Congress, in response, issued a stern warning against any statements or actions perceived as detrimental to party interests.
The three-hour-long meeting focused on devising a roadmap for the upcoming assembly elections while also sending a clear message that any deviation from the party line would invite consequences. The Congress’s Kerala unit, while sharing snippets from the discussion, took to social media platform X to reinforce its position. “Change is inevitable in Kerala. Congress has built the development paradigm and welfare model of Kerala, and we will do everything possible to bring our UDF to power,” the party’s state unit posted.
Tharoor had recently found himself at the center of controversy after a podcast interview in which he was quoted as saying that “if the Congress doesn’t want him, he has other options.” Though he later clarified that his comments were misconstrued, the remark had already sparked a fresh round of speculation about his political future. Adding fuel to the fire, Tharoor also shared a selfie with Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Britain’s Secretary of State Jonathan Reynolds, leading to further debate over his stance within the party.
Congress leaders have sought to downplay any internal discord, maintaining that the party remains focused on the upcoming elections. However, the emphasis on party discipline and the implicit warnings against dissent indicate a firm approach towards ensuring unity in the ranks.
As the Congress gears up for a crucial electoral battle in Kerala, the spotlight remains on Tharoor and his future moves. Whether his recent statements were a mere misunderstanding or indicative of deeper issues within the party will likely become clearer in the months ahead.
