Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has proposed a middle-ground solution to the ongoing controversy over Aurangzeb’s tomb in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Instead of removing the tomb, he suggested building a grand memorial for Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was executed on Aurangzeb’s orders. Amid rising demands for the tomb’s removal, Ramdas Athawale emphasized the need to move forward with Sambhaji Maharaj’s ideology while maintaining peace. He also urged the Muslim community to distance itself from Aurangzeb, stressing that Indian Muslims share a broader cultural heritage. With growing tensions, the ASI has taken precautionary measures, while authorities continue to navigate the sensitive issue.
Ramdas Athawale has suggested an alternative approach to the ongoing debate over Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Instead of demanding its removal, he has proposed building a grand memorial in honor of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the same region.
Speaking to reporters, the Republican Party of India (Ramdas Athawale) leader emphasized that removing the tomb would not resolve any issues. Instead, he advocated for commemorating Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was executed on Aurangzeb’s orders. He insisted that the country must move forward with Sambhaji Maharaj’s ideology while maintaining peace and harmony.
Ramdas Athawale’s remarks come at a time when several Hindu organizations have been demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, arguing that the 17th-century Mughal ruler was responsible for atrocities against Hindus. The controversy has intensified in recent weeks, particularly following the success of the Bollywood film ‘Chhaava,’ which depicts the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
The Union Minister also addressed the Muslim community, urging them not to associate themselves with Aurangzeb. He stated that Indian Muslims should recognize their cultural heritage and understand that their ancestors were once Hindus. “My request to the Muslim community is that you should not associate yourself with Aurangzeb. The Muslims here were Hindus. The Muslims here are not the children of Aurangzeb. They have no relation with him,” he said.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) currently protects Aurangzeb’s tomb. However, amid rising tensions, ASI recently covered parts of the structure with tin sheets following violent incidents in Nagpur and growing demands for its removal. The district administration took this precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order in the region.
Ramdas Athawale’s proposal to build a memorial for Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj could serve as a middle-ground solution, acknowledging the historical significance of both figures while preventing further communal discord. His call for peace and forward-thinking resonates with efforts to maintain harmony in a country with a diverse historical and cultural heritage.
As the debate continues, the government and local authorities will have to weigh the demands of different groups while ensuring that any decision taken does not disrupt the region’s peace and stability.
