Amid growing public concern, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) has demanded clear accountability from the Centre over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and also questioned the government’s delay and ambiguity around the caste census. In twin resolutions passed on Friday, the party called for urgent national action and a structured roadmap for both pressing issues.
The CWC expressed its disappointment over what it called “serious lapses” in one of the most heavily guarded regions in India. The April 22 terror strike in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead, mostly tourists, has triggered concern across the political spectrum. The Congress said that more than a week later, the government had failed to provide any clarity or communication, especially with the Opposition.
Party leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge and Bhupesh Baghel raised alarms over the silence from the Centre. They highlighted the absence of any action plan and criticised the government for not informing Opposition parties about ongoing developments. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reportedly insisted on the inclusion of the term “accountability” in the resolution.
Balancing its stand, the party reaffirmed support for national unity and condemned terrorism in all forms. It also urged the government to deal firmly with Pakistan through strategic coordination and international pressure. While conscious not to appear overly critical on matters of national security, Congress emphasized the need for transparency and effective governance.
The second resolution targeted the government’s announcement on the caste census, with Rahul Gandhi questioning both the timing and the absence of a budget or plan. The Congress credited itself for pushing this issue and said it was essential for delivering social justice. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy welcomed the CWC’s acknowledgment of his state’s model caste survey.
In a post on X, Reddy expressed pride that Telangana’s transparent and scientific caste survey was being viewed as a template for others. The Congress stated that caste-based data was critical for shaping inclusive public policy in sectors such as welfare, education, and jobs. The resolution described Rahul Gandhi as the party’s most consistent voice on this demand, noting its presence in their election manifesto.
The party concluded by stressing that social justice cannot be achieved without data, and urged the government to publish a clear timeline and plan for conducting the caste census.
