The Congress party made a significant leadership change on Friday by appointing Alka Lamba, a former Delhi MLA, as the new chief of its women’s wing, replacing Netta D’Souza. This decision comes as part of the party’s efforts to revamp its leadership and strategy.
In an official announcement, the Congress stated, “Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Presidents of All India Mahila Congress and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), as follows, with immediate effect. Alka Lamba, President of All India Mahila Congress and Varun Choudhary, President of National Students’ Union of India.”
Alka Lamba, a former president of the Delhi University Students’ Union, has a storied political history. She initially joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2014 after leaving the Congress but returned to the Congress fold in 2019. Lamba also served as an MLA from the Chandni Chowk Assembly constituency in Delhi in 2015.
In addition to appointing Alka Lamba, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has initiated preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. To streamline the candidate selection process, the party has established five screening committees responsible for shortlisting candidates.
These screening committees will oversee different clusters of states and Union Territories (UTs). The designated heads of these committees are as follows, Harish Chaudhary, Madhusudan Mistry, Rajni Patil, Bhakta Charan Das and Rana K P Singh.
