Tesla is reportedly planning to introduce its ultra-premium electric SUV, the Model X, to the Indian market, with the intention of catering to the growing demand for luxury electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. Sources indicate that the Model X will be imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) from Tesla’s Fremont facility in the United States. This move will expand Tesla’s existing offerings, which include the anticipated Model 3 and Model Y, and position the brand to compete in India’s rapidly evolving luxury EV segment.
The Model X, known for its distinctive falcon-wing doors and state-of-the-art features, is expected to appeal to India’s affluent EV buyers. Its flexible seating options for up to seven passengers, along with its advanced performance capabilities, make it a highly attractive option in the premium SUV market. If launched, the Model X could be priced between Rs 85 lakh and Rs 1.75 crore, inclusive of import duties, placing it in competition with other high-end electric SUVs like the BMW iX, Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and Audi RS e-tron GT.
Tesla’s decision to consider launching the Model X in India comes at a time when the company is focusing on broadening its market reach. A source familiar with the plans revealed that there is significant interest from Tesla’s existing customer base in India for the Model X, which has prompted the company to move forward with its potential introduction. Although Tesla had previously discontinued the production of the right-hand-drive (RHD) version of the Model X, the company is now looking to resume manufacturing the RHD variant to cater to Indian buyers.
With plans still under discussion, no official confirmation has been made regarding the launch timeline. However, the company’s move to secure showroom spaces in key locations such as New Delhi’s Aerocity and Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex highlights Tesla’s commitment to engaging with the Indian market. These showrooms will not only showcase Tesla’s EV lineup but will also serve as centers for customer interaction and service.
As Tesla moves closer to introducing its models to India, discussions about EV import tariffs continue between the Indian and U.S. governments. While the U.S. seeks lower tariffs to facilitate the entry of Tesla’s vehicles, India remains cautious, focusing on maintaining a balanced approach to EV imports and local manufacturing. The outcome of these talks could influence the final details of Tesla’s India launch.
