During a recent interaction at the University of Texas in Dallas, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, addressed the issue of unemployment in India and Western countries, attributing it to the outsourcing of production to China. He emphasized that India possesses the requisite skills to compete with China in manufacturing, provided it realigns its strategies toward production.
Gandhi pointed out the stark contrast in employment scenarios between the West, including India, and countries like China and Vietnam, which do not face similar unemployment issues due to their dominance in global manufacturing sectors. He reminisced about the past manufacturing prowess of the United States during the mid-20th century and discussed the gradual shift of production to countries like Korea, Japan, and eventually China.
“The act of production creates jobs,” Gandhi asserted, critiquing the current focus on consumption over production in the West and India. He advocated for a renewed emphasis on manufacturing to mitigate high unemployment rates and prevent the ensuing social issues, including increased political polarization.
Gandhi’s four-day unofficial visit to the US includes engagements with the Indian diaspora and youth, as well as meetings with US lawmakers and officials in Washington DC. His arrival in Dallas was marked by a warm reception from the Indian-American community, led by senior Congress leader Sam Pitroda and Mohinder Gilzian, president of the Indian National Overseas Congress, USA.
Highlighting the disconnect between India’s education and business systems, Gandhi called for the integration of vocational training to bridge this gap and combat the ideological biases currently influencing the educational landscape.
Convinced of India’s potential to rival China’s manufacturing capabilities, Gandhi cited examples from Indian states like Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, which have demonstrated significant successes in localized production efforts. However, he stressed the need for such initiatives to be scaled up and better coordinated to truly transform India’s production landscape.
