Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday underlined the critical role of skill development in nation-building, stating that a capable youth population is the cornerstone of a strong and self-reliant India. She was speaking at the ‘Samarth Bharat – Vichar Goshthi’, organised by the Bhaurao Deoras Seva Nyas at the NDMC Convention Centre in New Delhi.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that the programme was not merely an event but a meaningful step towards realising the vision of “Samarth Yuva through skill development, leading to a Samarth Bharat.” She reiterated that the Delhi government remains firmly committed to connecting every young person with skills and opportunities, enabling them to contribute productively to society and the nation.
Rekha Gupta acknowledged the long-standing work of the Bhaurao Deoras Seva Nyas, noting that the organisation has been continuously engaged in serving underprivileged sections of society and promoting social harmony, inspired by the ideals of service and nation-building associated with Bhaurao Deoras. The event was attended by several prominent personalities, including Omprakash Goyal, President of the Bhaurao Deoras Seva Nyas, and Krishna Gopal, Co-General Secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, along with other distinguished guests.
In her address, the Chief Minister emphasised that the goal of building a developed India is a shared responsibility of all citizens. She said that India’s population of 1.4 billion should not be viewed as a burden, but rather as the country’s greatest strength. If this vast human resource is equipped with appropriate skills and provided with adequate opportunities, many of the nation’s challenges can be addressed naturally and sustainably.
Rekha Gupta referred to the period after 2014 as a turning point in India’s development journey, stating that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the focus shifted from addressing basic needs to laying the foundation for long-term national progress. She cited initiatives such as the construction of toilets, the Ujjwala scheme, rural electrification, and reforms in the education sector as measures that created a strong base for inclusive growth. Skill development, she said, was made a priority as part of this broader development strategy.
Highlighting steps taken in this direction, the Chief Minister mentioned the expansion of the ITI network, modernisation of training institutions, and the implementation of the National Education Policy as significant milestones aimed at aligning education and training with contemporary needs. She noted that these initiatives are designed not only to improve employability but also to prepare youth for emerging sectors and future challenges.
Rekha Gupta stressed that skill development should not be seen merely as a means of employment generation. According to her, it also plays a vital role in preventing crime and fostering social empowerment. When young people are provided with proper guidance, training, and opportunities, they are able to support their families with dignity and integrate positively into the mainstream of society.
She praised the efforts of service organisations working at the grassroots level and said that true service does not end with providing temporary assistance. Instead, real service lies in making individuals self-reliant. She added that when the government and society work together, the vision of a self-reliant India can be effectively realised.
The Chief Minister also outlined several initiatives being undertaken by the Delhi government to connect youth with skill-based training. She specifically referred to plans aimed at children and adolescents involved in juvenile offences, stating that special centres are being developed where such individuals will receive shelter along with compulsory skill training. The objective, she said, is to ensure that they return to society as empowered and responsible citizens.
Concluding her address, Rekha Gupta said that if the government fulfils its responsibilities, society extends cooperation, and experienced members of the community provide guidance, a bright and secure future for the country can be collectively ensured. She reaffirmed the Delhi government’s resolve to continue investing in youth empowerment through skill development as a key pillar of nation-building.
