A government school in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, has come under intense scrutiny following a controversial lecture delivered by a spiritual speaker on Teacher’s Day. The speaker, Mahavishnu from the Paramporul Foundation, was invited to give a motivational talk but instead focused on spiritual concepts of rebirth and karma, which has sparked significant backlash from both the public and political figures.
During his speech, Mahavishnu discussed themes of past-life sins and the notion that individuals are born into their current circumstances due to actions in previous lives. His comments included statements on the destruction of ancient knowledge by the British and the supposed magical abilities of mantras. He argued that societal inequalities are a result of karma from past lives, a perspective that many found inappropriate and out of place for a school setting.
The school staff, who had expected a motivational talk, expressed their discomfort with the spiritual discourse, leading to a heated exchange between Mahavishnu and a staff member. The argument was captured on video and later posted on Mahavishnu’s YouTube channel, where it quickly went viral, drawing widespread criticism of the school administration for allowing such content.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has responded to the controversy by emphasizing the importance of scientific thinking in education. MK Stalin has ordered the development of new guidelines for school programs to ensure they promote progressive and scientific ideas. In a statement, he stressed, “Science is the way to progress,” and highlighted the need for educational content that fosters critical thinking and modern knowledge.
MK Stalin’s response comes amid criticism from various quarters, including Congress MP Jothimani, who condemned the incident on social media. Jothimani criticized the school for undermining the government’s efforts to promote scientific education and called for accountability from the School Education Minister, Anbil Mahesh. She urged action against those responsible for inviting the speaker and allowing the dissemination of non-scientific ideas in an educational setting.
The school administration has yet to issue a formal response or clarify their position on the incident. Meanwhile, Chief Minister MK Stalin’s initiative to update school program guidelines aims to reinforce the commitment to scientific education and ensure that future educational activities align with progressive values.
