In a distressing turn of events, a 30-year-old BJP worker lost his life in Nadia, West Bengal, adding to the wave of post-poll violence that has plagued the region. The incident occurred in Kaliganj’s Chandghar area, where Hafizul Sheikh was fatally shot and attacked with a sharp weapon by a group of 10-12 assailants on Saturday evening while playing carrom. Despite local intervention, the police eventually managed to retrieve Hafizul Sheikh’s body for autopsy after encountering resistance.
Hafizul Sheikh, a former CPM worker who had recently joined the BJP, was allegedly targeted by individuals associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). BJP leaders pointed fingers at TMC for orchestrating the attack, while TMC representatives dismissed the accusations, attributing Hafizul Sheikh’s death to familial disputes or internal strife within BJP ranks.
Meanwhile, in Sandeshkhali, tensions escalated as women protesters, accompanied by local BJP officials, staged a roadblock following the assault of a party worker by purported TMC supporters en route to casting his vote. Clashes ensued between the demonstrators and law enforcement officers dispatched to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries, including a sub-inspector who sustained a head injury after being struck with a brick.
To contain the escalating situation, authorities imposed Section 144 in 17 areas of Sandeshkhali until Tuesday morning. Despite police efforts to quell the unrest, a group of women intercepted a police vehicle and successfully liberated a detained BJP worker, Sadhan Nandy, armed with brooms and sticks. Additional reinforcements, including central force personnel, were subsequently deployed to restore order.
Amidst the turmoil, accusations of intimidation and threats against opposition party workers continue to surface, with CPM candidates alleging harassment by TMC members. However, TMC leaders deny any involvement in the incidents, expressing confidence in their electoral prospects.
The prevailing atmosphere of violence underscores the challenges of ensuring peace and stability in West Bengal’s post-election landscape, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action to address the underlying tensions and prevent further escalation of hostilities.
