Highlights
  • Viral video sparks controversy, sheds light on political power struggle.
  • BJP positions itself as champion of justice and empowerment.

A viral video featuring Sheikh Shahjahan, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader known for his strong influence in Sandeshkhali, has sparked a new wave of controversy in West Bengal’s political landscape. In the video, purportedly shared by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Malviya, Shahjahan is seen weeping “like an inconsolable child.”

Malviya, the BJP’s IT cell chief, accompanied the video with a scathing remark, suggesting that the once formidable persona of Mamata Banerjee’s poster boy had now lost its luster. The video’s dissemination comes amidst allegations against Shahjahan, including charges of sexual assault and land grabbing, leading to his recent arrest in Minakhan, North 24 Parganas district.

The BJP has seized upon Shahjahan’s predicament to underscore what they perceive as the deteriorating law and order situation under the TMC regime. Malviya’s warning suggests that individuals like Shahjahan, along with others accused of similar crimes, will face the consequences of their actions, with no sanctuary to be found even under Banerjee’s rule.

In response to Shahjahan’s arrest, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury took a swipe at Banerjee, implying that the Bengal CID would treat Shahjahan to special treatment, suggesting a cozy confinement complete with mutton, pulao, and biryani. Chowdhury’s remarks highlight the contentious relationship between the TMC and the state investigative agencies.

Meanwhile, the BJP has positioned itself as the champion of justice and empowerment for women, fielding Rekha Patra, a vocal protester against alleged sexual harassment and land grabbing incidents in Sandeshkhali, as its candidate from the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a recent visit to Bengal, capitalized on the Sandeshkhali incident to criticize Banerjee’s administration, pledging to ensure justice for the victims and asserting BJP’s commitment to empowering women in the state.

As the political climate in West Bengal intensifies ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the viral video of Sheikh Shahjahan serves as a potent symbol of the ongoing power struggle between the BJP and the TMC, further fueling the narrative of corruption and lawlessness under the current state government.
