US President Joe Biden has voiced deep concern over the unauthorized release of classified documents detailing Israel’s military preparations for a potential retaliatory strike on Iran. The leaked documents, which surfaced online last Friday, have prompted a thorough investigation by the Joe Biden administration, although it remains unclear whether the information was leaked or the result of a cyber hack. White House national security spokesman John Kirby addressed the issue on Monday, confirming the investigation while underscoring the administration’s uncertainty about how the documents were exposed.
“We’re deeply concerned, and the President remains deeply concerned about any leakage of classified information into the public domain. That is not supposed to happen, and it’s unacceptable when it does,” Kirby said during a briefing. He also noted that, at this point, officials do not have any indication that additional classified documents are circulating in the public domain.
The sensitive documents, attributed to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, provided critical details about Israel’s military movements in response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack on October 1. They suggested that Israel was still repositioning military assets in preparation for a potential strike. These documents were labeled as top secret and were initially shared within the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The leak is particularly troubling given the nature of the classified information and its potential implications for regional security and diplomatic relations. The Pentagon has launched a separate investigation into how the documents found their way onto the internet. According to US officials, the classified materials were first posted on the Telegram messaging app, where they quickly spread across channels popular with Iranian users.
The Joe Biden administration’s concerns stem from the possibility that the unauthorized release of such sensitive information could compromise national security and strain international relationships. The documents’ emergence online has raised alarms within intelligence communities, and the investigation is expected to focus on identifying how the leak occurred and preventing further breaches.
While the Pentagon and White House have yet to determine whether the release was due to hacking or an internal leak, the incident has prompted heightened scrutiny of intelligence sharing and the secure handling of classified information, particularly within international alliances like the Five Eyes.
