Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, who is contesting the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections as the AAP candidate in Kalkaji, has accused her BJP rival Ramesh Bidhuri’s son, Manish Bidhuri, of violating the “silence period” mandated by the Election Commission. The silence period, which is enforced 48 hours before voting, prohibits any campaign-related activities, including external interference, to ensure voters can make their decisions without undue influence. Atishi alleged that Manish Bidhuri was seen in the Kalkaji constituency with three to four outsiders during this restricted period, despite the ban on external interference.
Atishi, who is competing against former BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri, further claimed that Manish and others were in the area, which violates the silence period rules that restrict outsiders from entering constituencies during this time. According to Atishi, she observed the presence of these individuals during the crucial silence period on Monday, when such interference is strictly prohibited.
In addition to the incident involving Manish Bidhuri, Atishi also alleged that there had been intimidation of voters in the JJ camp in the Girinagar area by members of the BJP’s Tughlakabad team. She expressed concern about the reports she had received, which indicated that residents in the area were being threatened. Atishi was quick to inform the authorities about the situation, urging the police to take action to prevent further disruptions.
The “silence period” refers to the 48 hours leading up to an election, during which all election-related activities, including rallies, speeches, and any form of campaigning, are prohibited. This period allows voters to reflect on their choices without external pressure or influence. The regulations, outlined in Sections 126, 126A, and 135C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, are designed to maintain the integrity of the voting process by ensuring a peaceful environment.
Atishi highlighted that once the campaigning period officially ends, any activity meant to sway voters is prohibited. She pointed out that during this time, it is illegal for anyone from outside the constituency to engage in election-related activities. By informing the authorities about the interference from Manish Bidhuri and his associates, Atishi emphasized her commitment to ensuring that the election process remained free from manipulation.
Atishi also expressed hope that the police would take appropriate action against the offenders, ensuring that only the residents of the Kalkaji constituency could participate in the ongoing election. The AAP candidate’s allegations come just days before the election results are due to be announced. The assembly elections in Delhi will take place on Wednesday, and the results will be declared on Saturday.
The controversy surrounding the alleged violation of the silence period is expected to add to the intense political climate leading up to the elections. With the Election Commission strictly monitoring the situation, any violation could have significant consequences for the involved parties. As the campaigning period draws to a close, all eyes will be on how the authorities handle these allegations and ensure that the election remains fair and free of any interference.
