Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times on Wednesday following a cabinet meeting in the central town of Handlova. PM Robert Fico, who took power for the 4th time last October, has shifted Slovakia’s foreign policy towards more pro-Russian views during his tenure.

Here are 5 facts about Robert Fico:

Born on September 15, 1964, Robert Fico, aged 59, is married to lawyer Svetlana Ficova, with whom he shares a son, Michal. Reports from Slovak media suggest that the couple has separated.

Fluent in English, Robert Fico has a penchant for fast cars, football, and luxury watches. He was compelled to resign in 2018 after a journalist’s murder exposed high-level corruption, but later returned to power.

Robert Fico has drawn global attention for his provocative remarks about Ukraine, advocating for Kyiv to cede territory to Moscow to resolve the conflict—a proposal repeatedly rejected by Ukraine.

During his term, PM Robert Fico has triggered widespread protests with controversial policy changes, including alterations to media laws criticized for undermining the impartiality of public broadcasting.

Known for his favorite saying, “patience always brings red roses,” Robert Fico’s leadership style and political decisions have often sparked debate and dissent among the public.
