On Constitution Day, Arunachal Pradesh witnessed a reaffirmation of the country’s democratic spirit and constitutional ideals as Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik and Chief Minister Pema Khandu called upon citizens to honor the sanctity of the Constitution. November 26 marks a historic occasion when the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India in 1949, laying the foundation for a sovereign, democratic, and republic nation. The day serves not only as a reminder of India’s remarkable journey toward democracy but also as an opportunity for citizens to reflect on their responsibilities, rights, and collective role in nation-building. Both the Governor and the Chief Minister highlighted the vision, wisdom, and tireless efforts of Dr B R Ambedkar and other members of the Constituent Assembly, whose enduring legacy continues to guide India’s democratic ethos.

Upholding Constitutional Values: A Call from Arunachal Pradesh Leadership

Governor Parnaik, in his address, underscored the need for citizens to respect and uphold the Constitution, emphasizing its role as the ultimate guiding framework for India’s governance and social cohesion. He called upon the people of Arunachal Pradesh to honor their fundamental duties and commit to fostering a society that is just, harmonious, and progressive. According to the Governor, Constitution Day provides an important occasion to revisit the values enshrined in India’s supreme law, serving as a solemn reminder of the meticulous vision and labour that shaped modern India.

Highlighting the historical significance, the Governor traced the journey of the Constitution, noting its enforcement on January 26, 1950, which marked the birth of India as a sovereign, democratic republic. This transformative moment in history codified the principles of justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity as the foundation of the nation. Parnaik particularly emphasized Dr B R Ambedkar’s pivotal role as the chairman of the Drafting Committee, acknowledging his tireless dedication to ensuring that the Constitution protected the rights and dignity of every citizen, especially the socially and economically marginalized. Ambedkar’s vision, he noted, was not only to create a legal framework but also to inspire a society that respects human rights, promotes equality, and embraces democratic principles.

Governor Parnaik further reflected on how the Constitution continues to act as the cornerstone of governance and civic life in India. He stressed that the document is not merely a set of rules but a living testament to the collective dreams of a nation committed to democracy and social justice. The Governor’s message resonated with the importance of citizens actively engaging with their constitutional rights while simultaneously honoring their responsibilities. In his address, he highlighted that a citizen’s commitment to duties is inseparable from the enjoyment of rights, reinforcing the idea that a strong nation is built on the shared responsibilities of its people.

The Governor also urged individuals and institutions to draw inspiration from the Constitution to resolve contemporary social challenges, promote equality, and strengthen democratic institutions. By reaffirming their commitment to the principles of justice, liberty, and fraternity, citizens can ensure that the constitutional vision remains relevant and robust in the face of evolving societal dynamics.

Saluting the Vision of Ambedkar and Strengthening National Unity

Chief Minister Pema Khandu, in his message, echoed the Governor’s sentiments, paying homage to the vision of Dr B R Ambedkar and the entire Constituent Assembly. He highlighted that the Constitution remains a guiding beacon, ensuring that India’s democratic ethos is preserved and strengthened across generations. The Chief Minister emphasized that living by the values enshrined in the Constitution—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity—is essential for nurturing a stronger, united, and self-reliant India.

Khandu’s address reflected on the enduring significance of Constitution Day, stressing that it provides an opportunity for citizens to renew their commitment to democratic principles and national unity. He underscored that the Constitution is not just a historical document but a blueprint for creating an inclusive society where every citizen can exercise their rights while fulfilling their responsibilities. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of collective engagement, urging institutions, government bodies, and citizens alike to actively participate in building a nation grounded in constitutional ideals.

Both the Governor and the Chief Minister reinforced that Constitution Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices, dedication, and foresight of the members of the Constituent Assembly. Dr B R Ambedkar, as the chief architect of the Constitution, devoted his life to establishing a framework that ensured equality, justice, and dignity for all. His efforts, combined with the contributions of other visionary leaders, laid the foundation for a republic that guarantees rights while expecting citizens to uphold their duties diligently.

The Chief Minister highlighted the necessity of translating constitutional principles into everyday action. He encouraged citizens to foster social harmony, respect the rule of law, and contribute to nation-building in tangible ways. By embodying the spirit of the Constitution in daily life, individuals not only honor the legacy of Ambedkar and other architects of the Constitution but also contribute to a society that is resilient, equitable, and forward-looking.

Khandu further noted that the Constitution’s enduring relevance lies in its adaptability and its ability to guide citizens through changing times. By upholding its values, individuals help strengthen democratic institutions and safeguard the principles that underpin India’s sovereignty and unity. Constitution Day, therefore, is a platform for reflection, education, and renewed commitment to the ideals that continue to inspire progress and social cohesion.

The Governor and Chief Minister collectively emphasized that constitutional values are not merely abstract concepts but actionable principles that should guide governance, policymaking, and civic life. Upholding these values ensures that citizens are aware of their duties, understand their rights, and actively participate in democratic processes. By fostering a culture of constitutional awareness, Arunachal Pradesh, like the rest of India, can contribute to building a society that is both just and progressive, where diversity is respected, and unity is celebrated.

Through the observations of Constitution Day, both leaders reinforced that the adoption of the Constitution in 1949 was more than a legal milestone; it marked the beginning of a journey toward a republic built on equality, freedom, and democratic governance. By honoring this day, citizens reaffirm their commitment to the principles that govern the nation and recognize the responsibility each individual holds in preserving the democratic fabric of India. The reflections of the Governor and Chief Minister serve as a clarion call for renewed engagement with constitutional values, fostering social justice, national unity, and a collective sense of responsibility among all citizens.

The significance of the day also lies in its ability to remind future generations of the vision, courage, and perseverance that shaped India’s democracy. By celebrating Constitution Day, Arunachal Pradesh highlights the enduring relevance of the Constitution and the continued need for citizens to uphold its principles, ensuring that India remains a nation committed to justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all.
