Bihar’s political scene is heating up as Lalu Prasad Yadav strategically moves to secure a smooth path for his son, Tejashwi Yadav. The seasoned politician appears determined to sideline two emerging Congress leaders, Pappu Yadav and Kanhaiya Kumar, who have shown potential to gain significant ground in Bihar’s political landscape. Both leaders are seen as formidable rivals in key voter demographics—Pappu Yadav among Yadavs and Muslims, and Kanhaiya Kumar among Dalits, Muslims, and sections of upper castes.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Lalu’s shrewd political maneuvers were evident when he denied Kanhaiya Kumar a Congress ticket in Begusarai by ceding the seat to the Left, forcing Kanhaiya to contest from Northeast Delhi, where he lost to Manoj Tiwari. Similarly, Lalu opposed Pappu Yadav’s candidacy in Purnia, fielding RJD’s Bima Bharti. Undeterred, Pappu contested as an independent and emerged victorious, defeating both RJD and JD(U) candidates.
Lalu’s intentions are clear: he views both Pappu Yadav and Kanhaiya Kumar as threats to Tejashwi’s leadership. Veteran journalist Ashok Kumar Sharma remarks, “Lalu Prasad Yadav knows the importance of eliminating any competition to Tejashwi. Both Kanhaiya and Pappu have the charisma and grassroots appeal that could overshadow Tejashwi.”
Kanhaiya Kumar’s eloquence and anti-BJP stance make him particularly appealing among Muslim voters, a critical base for the RJD. Lalu, aware of Kanhaiya’s influence, has consistently kept him at bay. This was evident in 2019 when Kanhaiya campaigned across Bihar but never shared a stage with Tejashwi. Moreover, Lalu’s refusal to allow Kanhaiya to contest from Begusarai in 2024 underscores his “zero tolerance” policy against the young Congress leader in Bihar.
Similarly, Pappu Yadav, with his stronghold in Seemanchal and Kosi regions, commands loyalty among Yadavs and Muslims. Known for his ability to bridge caste divides, Pappu gained support from upper castes in Purnia by personally addressing their grievances. His independent victory in 2024, despite RJD’s opposition, highlights his growing influence.
The Congress’s growing inclination toward Pappu Yadav and Kanhaiya Kumar could further strain its alliance with the RJD. As Congress contemplates stepping out of RJD’s shadow, it remains uncertain whether these two leaders will be the party’s future faces in Bihar. However, Lalu’s calculated efforts to block their rise indicate his focus on ensuring Tejashwi’s undisputed leadership.
