Maharashtra’s political landscape is once again in the spotlight after Uddhav Thackeray’s meeting with BJP leader and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. The unexpected meeting has sparked speculation about Thackeray’s intentions and the possibility of his reconciliation with the BJP. This development comes amid ongoing tensions within the Mahayuti alliance and the Shiv Sena’s struggle to regain its foothold after losing ground to Eknath Shinde’s faction.
Thackeray’s move to pitch for Bharat Ratna for Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is being seen as a calculated effort to reclaim the Hindutva narrative, which the Shinde faction has successfully leveraged. By focusing on Savarkar, Thackeray has sent a clear message to both his opponents and his allies. His demand for Bharat Ratna could have been made independently, but his meeting with Fadnavis adds significant political weight to the gesture.
Notably, Sanjay Raut, a key Thackeray aide, was absent from the meeting, fueling speculation about internal differences within the Shiv Sena (UBT). Many believe that Raut’s influence led Thackeray away from the BJP, but this meeting signals a potential shift. Thackeray, once at loggerheads with the BJP, appears to have extended an olive branch, leaving the ball in the BJP’s court.
The BJP, on the other hand, is grappling with challenges within its Mahayuti alliance. Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction is seen as a temporary partner, lacking ideological alignment with the BJP’s core agenda. Meanwhile, the delay in cabinet portfolio distribution has further strained relations within the alliance. Experts suggest that the BJP might view Thackeray’s Shiv Sena as a more reliable long-term ally, given their shared history and Hindutva ideology.
Thackeray’s focus on Savarkar also poses a direct challenge to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, whose past remarks on Savarkar have been contentious. By aligning with Savarkar’s legacy, Thackeray is positioning himself as a staunch Hindutva advocate, potentially paving the way for an exit from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) if Gandhi’s statements continue to clash with Shiv Sena’s stance.
This political maneuver has not only reignited discussions about Thackeray’s future alliances but has also sent a strong message to Shinde and Pawar. With Fadnavis carefully handling the bouquet gifted by Thackeray, the symbolic gesture hints at deeper political realignments in the near future. Maharashtra’s politics is abuzz with speculation: is Thackeray’s return to the BJP imminent under Savarkar’s banner?
