Apple has launched the first developer beta of iOS 18.2, bringing a host of new AI-powered features, including the much-anticipated integration of ChatGPT into its Siri virtual assistant. While iOS 18.1 is expected to be released this month, with an official date still unconfirmed, attention is now focused on the capabilities introduced in iOS 18.2. Rumors suggest the first wave of Apple Intelligence will roll out to selected iPhones by October 28, with a full release of iOS 18.2 slated for December.
The iOS 18.2 beta introduces groundbreaking AI enhancements that promise to take user experience to a new level. One of the standout features is the integration of ChatGPT with Siri. Users can now enable Siri to pass requests to ChatGPT, allowing for more detailed information and advanced content generation without requiring a ChatGPT account. This feature can generate text and images based on user prompts and supports on-screen responses for enhanced interactivity. Siri can even answer questions about images being viewed on the device.
Another notable addition is the Visual Intelligence feature, available on iPhone 16 models. This AI-powered tool enables users to identify objects and locations by simply pointing their camera. By long-pressing the Camera Control button, users can retrieve details like business hours, reviews, and search for related information online. Visual Intelligence can also interact with ChatGPT for additional insights about the objects or places identified by the camera.
iOS 18.2 also introduces Genmoji, a feature that allows users to create custom emojis. While earlier iOS versions can display these Genmojis as images, the ability to create them is exclusive to iOS 18.2. The beta version also expands the Rewrite Writing Tools feature, allowing users to select from a wider range of tones and styles, such as converting an email into a poem or adopting more dynamic language for various types of content.
Another addition is the Image Playground app, which lets users create stylized images based on photos or prompts, with built-in integration in Messages. This complements the Image Wand feature, which enhances sketches made on iPad using Apple Pencil into polished images.
Beyond AI features, iOS 18.2 includes updates aimed at improving the overall user experience. The Mail app now organizes emails into categories such as important messages, newsletters, and transactions, while Apple’s Control Center has a new Type to Siri quick access option. Additionally, the Volume Limit feature in the Sound and Haptics settings offers users control over the maximum audio playback volume.
As Apple continues to advance its AI capabilities, iOS 18.2 promises to deliver a more personalized and interactive user experience, setting the stage for the future of Apple Intelligence.
