  • American, Indian accused of coercive religious conversion in Pune home.
  • Police seize devices, probe ongoing under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita laws.

An American national and an Indian man were arrested in Pune after allegedly attempting to convert a 27-year-old local resident to Christianity by promising financial support and mental peace. The incident, which reportedly took place during a home visit, has sparked legal action under India’s newly enacted Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and the Foreigners Act. Police have also detained a minor involved in the incident and are continuing their investigation.

The incident came to light after Sunny Bansilal Danani, a resident of Pune, approached the police and filed a formal complaint. According to Danani, the accused visited his residence on a Sunday and tried to persuade him to convert to Christianity. The visitors were identified as Schaefer Javin Jacob, 41, a California-based American national, Stiven Vijay Kadam, 46, an Indian citizen, and a 16-year-old boy. Danani alleged that they dismissed his existing religious beliefs and told him that accepting Jesus as the only true God would bring him happiness, peace of mind, and financial prosperity.

Allegations of Coercion and Religious Intolerance

In his complaint, Danani claimed that the three visitors repeatedly urged him to embrace Christianity, promising both mental peace and material benefits in return. He stated that the men spoke dismissively of other religions and deities, categorizing them as myths. The offer of financial assistance appeared to be conditional upon his conversion. The nature of this interaction and the pressure allegedly applied led Danani to believe that the intent was not just to preach a religion but to coerce him into leaving his faith.

Police have taken these claims seriously and registered a case under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. Additionally, Section 3(5) was invoked, which addresses criminal acts carried out by multiple individuals sharing a common intention. As one of the accused is a foreign national, charges under the Foreigners Act have also been applied.

Legal Action and Investigation

Police Inspector Vijayanand Patil, who is overseeing the case, confirmed that Jacob and Kadam were taken into custody shortly after the complaint was filed. The minor accompanying them was not arrested but handed over to his mother, in accordance with legal provisions related to juvenile offenders.

During the initial phase of the investigation, the police seized two mobile phones belonging to the accused to search for electronic evidence that could support or contradict the complainant’s account. Forensic teams are currently examining the devices for messages, call records, or media that may have relevance to the case.

Senior Inspector Ashok Kadlag further clarified that the investigation is ongoing and no major disturbance or threat to public order has been reported in the area. Authorities have made it clear that this is being treated as a legal matter without any immediate impact on law and order.

The American national, Schaefer Javin Jacob, reportedly visited India using both tourist and business visas. His travel history is being reviewed to determine whether similar activities were undertaken in other parts of the country. According to officials, Jacob has visited multiple Indian cities in recent months. Kadam, the Indian national, is said to be employed in a private firm and allegedly collaborated with Jacob during these visits.

The accused are currently undergoing legal procedures, and their statements are being recorded. The involvement of the minor, though limited in legal accountability, is being reviewed under the lens of child welfare and parental supervision. Authorities are also exploring if the case has any wider network or pattern involving coordinated conversion attempts.

This case has once again ignited discussions around the complex and often sensitive issue of religious conversions in India. While Indian law permits the free practice and propagation of religion, it also criminalizes forced or fraudulent conversion attempts. The balance between religious freedom and coercion remains at the center of many such cases, often drawing political and societal attention.

As investigations continue, officials have appealed to the public to refrain from making speculative or inflammatory comments, emphasizing that the matter is being handled in accordance with legal standards. The police are expected to present more findings as they review the digital evidence and statements from both the complainant and the accused.
