On Monday night, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that district administrations and police in several districts of Uttar Pradesh are “illegally” confining opposition party workers to their homes, thereby preventing them from participating in the vote counting process. Akhilesh Yadav shared CCTV footage of the incident on his official social media handle, urging immediate intervention.
Allegations of illegal confinement:
Akhilesh Yadav claimed that opposition party workers in districts including Mirzapur, Aligarh, and Kannauj have been placed under house arrest by the district magistrate and police administration. He stated that these actions are intended to hinder their participation in the vote counting scheduled for the following day.
Appeal to authorities:
Akhilesh Yadav called upon the Honourable Supreme Court, the Election Commission of India (@ECISVEEP), the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh (@CEOUP), and the Uttar Pradesh Police Chief (@dgpup @Uppolice) to take immediate notice of the situation. He emphasized the need for the release of the detained individuals and an end to such actions against opposition workers.
Commitment to peaceful electoral process:
Highlighting the importance of maintaining a peaceful electoral process, Akhilesh Yadav stressed that all political parties are functioning peacefully and that the administration should avoid any unethical actions that could incite public outrage. He expressed hope that biased district magistrates and administrative officials would be promptly removed to ensure a fair and peaceful vote-counting process.
Akhilesh Yadav’s allegations and the shared CCTV footage have brought significant attention to the issue. The Samajwadi Party leader’s call for action underscores the importance of fair electoral practices and the need for unbiased administration during the vote counting process.
