AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes stirred controversy recently by sharing a shirtless photo of himself on LinkedIn during a business meeting where he was receiving a massage. The post was met with swift criticism, with many deeming it unprofessional and expressing concerns about the comfort and safety of female employees.
In the photo’s caption, Fernandes explained that the suggestion for the massage came after a stressful week. He emphasized the cultural acceptance of such practices within AirAsia and Indonesia, asserting that he can receive a massage and conduct a management meeting simultaneously.
In a now-deleted post, the Air Asia CEO said, “Was a stressful week, and Veranita Yosephine suggested a massage. Got to love Indonesia and AirAsia culture that I can have a massage and do a management meeting.”
“We are making big progress and I have now finalized Capital A structure. Exciting days ahead. Proud of what we have built and never have lost sight of the finish,” he added.
However, immediately after his posting, the update did not go well with the netizens. As they targeted him of crossing professional boundaries and exhibiting inappropriate behavior. After facing backlash, Fernandes later clarified that he posted the photo while in pain after a lengthy flight, without considering the potential repercussions. He swiftly removed the post and conveyed that he had no intention to offend anyone.
Moreover, the incident has ignited a broader discussion on the limits of professionalism and appropriate conduct on social media, especially for high-profile executives, with some also suggesting that the controversy could potentially impact Fernandes’ reputation and influence the perception of AirAsia as a company.
However, amid the controversy it is pertinent to note that, Fernandes is acknowledged for transforming air travel by spearheading AirAsia, a budget carrier challenging full-fare competitors.
Fernandes, recognized for his disruptive approach to the aviation industry, fundamentally altered the landscape of affordable and accessible air travel.
