Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, addressed concerns over recent actions by the Election Commission and the Income Tax department, stating that while he has no objection to searches of his helicopter, he takes issue with the denial of a trial run post-search, despite no findings.
Speaking at a press conference in Tamluk constituency, Banerjee clarified his stance, asserting that while searches and seizures are permissible, denying a trial run without evidence is beyond the Income Tax department’s authority. He indicated that legal action would be pursued to address this matter.
The controversy emerged after allegations surfaced on Sunday that Income Tax officials had raided Banerjee’s helicopter at Behala Flying Club. The Trinamool Congress accused the authorities of targeting Banerjee while ignoring alleged instances of cash seizures from BJP leaders’ vehicles in Jalpaiguri just days before the elections.
Banerjee also criticized the Election Commission, alleging collusion with the BJP and deployment of Income Tax personnel to conduct searches. He emphasized the resilience of Bengal’s spirit against such actions.
However, official sources denied any search taking place at Banerjee’s helicopter, labeling media reports as misleading. According to the sources, no enforcement action was undertaken by the Income Tax Department regarding Banerjee’s helicopter. Additionally, it was noted that the Behala Flying Club lacks adequate security measures, a concern previously raised with the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal.
During routine verification on April 14, a Quick Response Team visited the Behala Flying Club to gather information based on Air Traffic Control data, according to sources. The denial of a search contrasts with earlier allegations, adding complexity to the unfolding narrative surrounding Banerjee’s helicopter.
