The Setu Bharatam Programme continues to redefine road safety and logistical efficiency on India’s national highways. Launched on March 4, 2016, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this ambitious initiative which aims to eliminate railway level crossings through the construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs), ensuring safer and seamless travel for commuters across the country has completed 8 years.
Milestone Achievements
Since its inception, the Setu Bharatam Programme has made significant strides in infrastructure development. Over the past 8 years, it has successfully constructed 123 ROBs/RUBs and rehabilitated 1,500 existing bridges. These efforts have not only enhanced road safety but also reduced traffic congestion at critical junctions, facilitating smoother transportation.
Financial Commitment and Project Scope
Backed by a substantial budget of Rs. 50,000 crore, the programme has been instrumental in modernizing India’s road network.
Spanning 19 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, the Setu Bharatam Programme has prioritized strategic locations prone to railway level crossings. By addressing regional infrastructural needs, it has bolstered connectivity and economic growth across diverse geographies.
Technological Innovations and Sustainability
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has leveraged advanced technologies like the Indian Bridge Management System (IBMS) to monitor and maintain bridges effectively. Mobile Inspection Units have played a crucial role in conducting condition surveys, ensuring timely repairs and minimizing environmental impacts.
While the programme has achieved commendable milestones, challenges such as environmental conservation remain pertinent. Issues surrounding tree felling for bridge construction have prompted environmental assessments and compensatory measures, underscoring the programme’s commitment to sustainable development.
Future Vision
Looking ahead, the Setu Bharatam Programme is poised to further enhance India’s transportation infrastructure. By completing the construction of 208 new bridges and continuing rehabilitation efforts, it aims to strengthen logistical efficiencies, improve the ease of doing business, and support economic activities in beneficiary states.
As the Setu Bharatam Programme commemorates its 8th anniversary, it stands as a testament to India’s commitment to transformative infrastructure development. Through strategic investments and meticulous planning, the programme has set new benchmarks in road safety and connectivity, paving the way for a modernized transportation network and sustainable growth.
