Fatalities Across Districts

The incidents, which occurred as thunderstorms lashed various parts of the state, resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. Pratapgarh reported the highest toll with 11 fatalities attributed to lightning strikes, followed by Sultanpur with seven, Chandauli with six, and Mainpuri with five deaths. Other districts including Prayagraj, Auraiya, Deoria, Hathras, Varanasi, and Siddharthnagar each reported one fatality. Numerous individuals in these districts also sustained burn injuries.

In Pratapgarh, the victims were struck in different areas, and their bodies have been sent for postmortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death. Chandauli, in eastern Uttar Pradesh, witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning between 4 pm and 6 pm, resulting in injuries to several individuals who are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals.

Tragic Circumstances

Among the victims in Sultanpur were three children who were struck by lightning while engaged in agricultural activities or fetching water. In Auraiya, a 14-year-old boy sheltering under a mango tree succumbed to lightning, while in Deoria, a 5-year-old girl tragically lost her life while walking towards her family members in a farm field. Varanasi reported a case where two brothers were struck by lightning, resulting in one fatality and the other undergoing medical treatment for severe burns.

Meteorological Outlook

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts predicting continued widespread rainfall across Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states and Union territories over the next five days. This forecast suggests ongoing challenging weather conditions that may further impact public safety and agricultural activities.

The tragic incidents underscore the importance of precautionary measures during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, especially in rural areas where agricultural work often exposes individuals to heightened risk. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks associated with severe weather conditions.
