The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is set to celebrate its 30th foundation day on August 17, 2024, at Kaushal Bhawan, New Moti Bagh, New Delhi. On this occasion, Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Education and Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge), will be the chief guest. Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education and Development of the North Eastern Region, will be the guest of honor. Senior officials from the Ministry of Education, Government of India, members of the NCTE General Body, chairpersons of NCTE’s four regional committees, heads of autonomous bodies such as UGC, AICTE, NUEPA, NCERT, IGNOU, NIOS, CBSE, NVS, and KVS, along with professors, teacher trainers, researchers, university student-teachers, school teachers, educational administrators, NCTE officials, and other staff members will also attend the 30th foundation day celebration of NCTE.

Over the past three decades, NCTE has achieved remarkable milestones, evolving from an advisory body to a statutory body of the Government of India. The council has played a crucial role in recognizing and regulating teacher education institutions, ensuring the maintenance of quality standards. In recent years, NCTE has recognized many teacher education institutions, enforcing strict guidelines and standards. NCTE has made significant contributions to maintaining the quality of teacher education across the country.
Elevating the Standard of Education in the Country
The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is the regulatory and governing body for teacher education in India. Its purpose is to maintain and improve the standards of teacher education in the country. The council recognizes all teacher education programs at the central and state levels and monitors their operations. NCTE’s primary objective is to ensure that teacher education institutions prepare high-quality professional teachers who can contribute to raising the standard of education in the country. Additionally, it sets and enforces minimum standards for teacher education. The council recognizes teacher education institutions and ensures the regulation and coordination of teacher education programs in training institutions. NCTE encourages research and development activities to enhance the standards of teacher education and provides suggestions and recommendations to improve the quality of teacher education from time to time.

As NCTE celebrates this achievement, it also looks forward to future endeavors. Promoting research and innovation in teacher education is another focal point. NCTE will encourage teacher education institutions across the country to engage in research that addresses contemporary challenges and explores new educational approaches. It is essential to ensure that teachers have easy access to professional development opportunities. On the NEP front, NCTE will work in collaboration with other bodies such as NCERT, NIEPA, UGC, and HEI for the effective implementation of the National Mentoring Mission (NMM), the National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST), the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP), and other teacher education reforms aligned with NEP 2020. By working together, we can ensure that the next decade of NCTE is even more fruitful and transformative.
NCTE was established in 1995 under the National Council for Teacher Education Act, 1993 (NCTE Act). Its headquarters are located in New Delhi. NCTE is headed by a chairperson appointed by the Government of India. It includes various experts, educational representatives, and government officials related to the field of teaching and teacher education.
