At least 11 people lost their lives and several others were injured after lightning strikes hit various locations in Malda district of West Bengal on Thursday afternoon. The fatalities and injuries occurred across multiple areas, according to a government official.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her grief over the tragic incident and extended her condolences to the bereaved families. The district administration has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each family of the deceased.
“So far, 11 people have been killed due to lightning strikes. Many injured people are being treated at various hospitals, with some in critical condition,” the official told PTI.
The victims include:
Chandan Sahani (40), Raj Mriddha (16), and Manajit Mandal (21) from Sahapur.
Asit Saha (19) from Gajol, who was struck while working in a mango orchard.
Rana Sheikh (8) from Manickchak’s Mohammed Tola.
Nayan Roy (23) and Priyanka Singha (20), a couple from Harishchandrapur.
Atul Mandal (65) and Sheikh Sabrul (11) from Haddatola.
Sumitra Mandal (45) from Mirdadpur.
Pankaj Mandal (23) from Englishbazar’s Milki.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conveyed her heartfelt sympathies on social media, writing, “My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones in Malda due to the tragic lightning strikes. I extend my deepest condolences to them during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured, and I pray for their swift recovery.”
CM Mamata Banerjee also assured that the district administration is working tirelessly to provide all necessary support to the affected, pledging that the government will do everything in its capacity to assist those in need.
