From September 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, to October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, India is set to witness a nationwide celebration of service, fitness, and civic responsibility, as the country observes ‘Seva Paksha’ or Service Fortnight. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced the initiative during the launch of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha’s (BJYM) Namo Yuva Run campaign at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. This period aims to reflect the Prime Minister’s vision of service, nation-building, and the promotion of a healthy and engaged youth, with initiatives spanning across multiple cities in India and internationally, engaging millions of young citizens in activities promoting fitness, de-addiction, and the spirit of Swadeshi. Through a combination of physical activity, public engagement, and community service, the initiative is poised to reinforce the values of discipline, participation, and national pride among India’s youth, creating a landmark moment in public campaigns led by the government and youth organizations.

Seva Paksha and the Namo Yuva Run: Mobilizing Youth Across India

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted that Seva Paksha represents not just a symbolic gesture but a practical reflection of Prime Minister Modi’s vision over his eleven years in office. Speaking at the launch, Mandaviya emphasized how the country has progressed and transformed through PM Modi’s governance, policies, and personal initiatives aimed at building a “New India.” He referenced recent reforms such as the simplification of GST into primarily 5 per cent and 18 per cent slabs, showcasing the government’s efforts to make life simpler and more efficient for citizens. Beyond economic reforms, Mandaviya stressed the importance of health and fitness, recounting his participation in the ‘Sunday on Cycle’ initiative, a movement now active in over 8,000 locations with participation from more than fifty Members of Parliament.

The Namo Yuva Run, a flagship youth-oriented campaign under BJYM, will see unprecedented participation as part of the celebrations. To commemorate PM Modi’s 75th birthday, 75 cities across India will host these runs, with each event expected to attract 10,000 to 15,000 young participants, totaling nearly one million youth running simultaneously. BJYM President and MP Tejasvi Surya described the campaign as the country’s largest and most participative mass youth fitness initiative. The runs are designed not only to encourage physical well-being but also to foster a sense of civic responsibility, patriotism, and commitment to social service among participants. By involving youth in simultaneous events across India, the campaign aims to create a visually and symbolically powerful demonstration of collective energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to nation-building.

The campaign will extend beyond India, with the Indian diaspora hosting Namo Yuva Runs in 75 international cities, reflecting India’s global engagement and the Prime Minister’s appeal to citizens abroad. Mandaviya underscored the broader message of Seva Paksha: rather than receiving gifts on his birthday, Prime Minister Modi encourages citizens to dedicate themselves to fulfilling their responsibilities towards the country. In this context, the Namo Yuva Run is positioned as a practical and symbolic contribution by India’s youth to the PM’s vision of active citizenship, healthy living, and national development. The initiative emphasizes both individual well-being and collective responsibility, fostering a culture of engagement that transcends age, geography, and social background.

National Impact, Cultural Significance, and Promoting Fitness

Mansukh Mandaviya also spoke about the broader objectives of Seva Paksha and the Namo Yuva Run campaign, emphasizing its alignment with the government’s larger vision for youth engagement. The initiative aims to instill the principles of discipline, commitment, and service while promoting a culture of physical fitness and healthy living. By integrating fitness, de-addiction awareness, and Swadeshi spirit into these mass participation events, the campaign seeks to blend traditional Indian values with contemporary health and lifestyle goals. The inclusion of activities such as running and cycling not only encourages healthy lifestyles but also provides opportunities for youth to engage in community initiatives, creating lasting social impact.

Cultural and spiritual undertones further enhance the significance of the campaign. By linking the celebration to PM Modi’s birthday and Gandhi Jayanti, Seva Paksha resonates with themes of leadership, service, and civic duty. Gandhi’s philosophy of selfless service and active participation in nation-building serves as a backdrop, reinforcing the importance of contributing to society in meaningful ways. The campaign encourages participants to reflect on their individual roles in nation-building, fostering a sense of shared responsibility that goes beyond physical fitness. Through public participation, educational initiatives, and widespread media coverage, Seva Paksha integrates social awareness with personal development, creating a holistic approach to youth engagement.

Actor and fitness icon Milind Soman, serving as the campaign’s brand ambassador, highlighted the importance of such initiatives in shaping the next generation. He expressed enthusiasm for the Namo Yuva Run, emphasizing that programs promoting fitness, health consciousness, and community engagement can strengthen both the physical and social fabric of society. The involvement of prominent figures and public personalities serves to motivate young participants and amplify the campaign’s message, demonstrating the role of inspiration and mentorship in large-scale national initiatives. Soman’s participation further reinforces the visibility and appeal of Seva Paksha, bridging the gap between government-led programs and grassroots engagement.

The operational scale of the initiative is remarkable. With nearly one million youth participating simultaneously across 75 cities, logistical coordination, public engagement, and awareness campaigns are critical. The campaign leverages social media, digital platforms, and traditional outreach to mobilize participants, disseminate information, and monitor the progress of each event. This combination of technology, organizational planning, and public enthusiasm illustrates a modern approach to mass campaigns, blending efficiency with inclusivity. By extending the initiative internationally, the campaign also promotes India’s cultural and social vision to a global audience, highlighting the country’s commitment to youth development and public health.

The dual focus on fitness and civic service ensures that Seva Paksha addresses multiple dimensions of national development. Youth participation in physical activity fosters personal well-being, while their collective involvement in public initiatives reinforces social cohesion, patriotism, and a sense of shared purpose. By connecting fitness with values of service and community engagement, the initiative encourages young citizens to internalize leadership, responsibility, and teamwork. The nationwide and global reach of the campaign also enables cross-cultural interaction, community-building, and international solidarity, demonstrating the multifaceted impact of youth-focused programs on society.

Furthermore, Seva Paksha reinforces the message that personal health, civic engagement, and social responsibility are interconnected. Through mass participation in physical fitness, youth are reminded of the importance of maintaining their own well-being while contributing to broader societal goals. By linking health initiatives to civic and cultural events, the campaign creates a compelling narrative that emphasizes holistic development, personal discipline, and national pride. The initiative exemplifies how large-scale public programs can simultaneously achieve multiple objectives, from improving health metrics to strengthening social cohesion and fostering civic responsibility.

In essence, Seva Paksha and the Namo Yuva Run represent a landmark in India’s youth engagement strategies, integrating physical fitness, social responsibility, cultural awareness, and global outreach. By celebrating PM Modi’s birthday and Gandhi Jayanti, the campaign provides a unique opportunity for young citizens to actively participate in nation-building, reflect on civic duties, and embrace values of service, discipline, and patriotism. The initiative demonstrates how government-led programs, combined with community involvement and global participation, can create meaningful and lasting impact, inspiring a generation to take responsibility for their personal well-being and the collective welfare of the nation.

Through strategic planning, celebrity engagement, and widespread mobilization, Seva Paksha fosters a sense of unity, health consciousness, and civic responsibility among millions of participants. It highlights the power of coordinated youth engagement, demonstrating that service, fitness, and patriotism can converge in ways that create measurable societal benefits. By merging traditional Indian values with contemporary health and social objectives, the campaign sets a benchmark for large-scale public initiatives, emphasizing the enduring importance of youth in shaping the future of India.
