In a historic moment for Mizoram, Lalduhoma, leader of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), was sworn in as the Chief Minister on Friday, breaking the longstanding dominance of the Congress and Mizo National Front in the state since its formation in 1987. Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati administered the oath of office and secrecy to Lalduhoma and his council of 11 ministers at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan.
The newly appointed Chief Minister addressed the media following the swearing-in ceremony, unveiling a set of 12 priority programs to be executed within the first 100 days of his government. Lalduhoma emphasized a commitment to supporting local farmers by fixing minimum prices for key products—ginger, turmeric, chilli, and broomsticks. Farmers will have the flexibility to sell directly or to the government, marking a significant agricultural policy shift.
Anti-corruption measures took center stage in Lalduhoma’s agenda, as he pledged to invite the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe corruption cases within the state. Additionally, a monitoring committee will be established to oversee development projects across Mizoram, reinforcing transparency and accountability.
The composition of the Council of Ministers reflects a fresh start, with all 11 members being first-time ministers. Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer turned politician, will personally oversee crucial portfolios such as finance, planning and program implementation, general administration, policy and cabinet, as well as law and judicial departments.
K Sapdanga, the working president of ZPM and owner of Mizoram’s largest circulated daily, Vanglaini, will be responsible for home, urban development and poverty alleviation, personnel and administrative reforms, along with disaster management and rehabilitation.
Breaking gender barriers, Lalrinpuii, the sole woman member of the Cabinet, has been entrusted with health and family welfare, social welfare and tribal affairs, women and child development, and tourism departments. As a first-time MLA elected from the Lunglei East constituency, Lalrinpuii is among the three women elected to the Assembly.
The Council of Ministers also includes Lalthansanga, who achieved a notable victory by defeating former Chief Minister Zoramthanga in the Aizawl East-I constituency.
With these dynamic appointments and a comprehensive set of priorities, the newly formed government under Lalduhoma’s leadership aims to usher in a transformative era for Mizoram, focusing on inclusive development, agricultural empowerment, and a resolute stand against corruption.
