From being the youngest debutant in IPL history to smashing a century in just 35 balls, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become a name to watch. His rapid rise in the cricketing world has drawn comparisons to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, but experts and former cricketers suggest that patience is needed before the youngster makes his debut for the Indian senior team.
Early Success in IPL and the Pressure of Expectations
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s journey in IPL 2025 began with an unexpected opportunity. Despite not featuring in the Rajasthan Royals’ initial lineup, he grabbed his chance when captain Sanju Samson was injured. Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s debut match against Lucknow Super Giants saw him make an instant impact, scoring 34 runs off 20 balls. However, it was on April 28, when he became the youngest player to score an IPL century at the age of 14 years and 32 days, that his reputation soared. He scored 101 off 38 balls against Gujarat Titans, which not only made him the second-fastest centurion in IPL history but also the fastest Indian. His performances raised eyebrows and prompted fans to draw comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar, who began his own journey at a young age.
Patience and Domestic Experience Needed Before Senior Team Debut
While Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s IPL feats have made him a household name, former India spinner Venkatapathy Raju urges caution. Venkatapathy Raju, who has experience as a BCCI selector, believes that the young talent should not be rushed into the senior team just yet. He emphasized that Vaibhav Suryavanshi must first prove himself in domestic cricket and showcase consistency in longer formats like the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Irani Trophy. “Talent-wise, we’ve seen what he can do with a white ball. But he needs to excel in four-day games and domestic tournaments to truly show his consistency and ability,” Venkatapathy Raju said.
No Comparison with Tendulkar Yet
Venkatapathy Raju also downplayed comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar, who established his credentials early in his career with impressive domestic performances before making his international debut. Venkatapathy Raju reminded everyone that Sachin Tendulkar made centuries in Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Rest of India matches, all before he was called up to the national team. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, though talented, still has much to prove before being considered for the senior team. His recent performances, including a 190-run knock in an India U-19 preparatory match, have surely placed him on the radar, but the wait continues.
Despite his age, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is showing promise, and his cricketing journey is one to watch closely. He is currently with the India U-19 team in England, looking to build on his impressive early career.
