Yamandu Orsi, representing Uruguay’s left-wing Broad Front coalition, has emerged victorious in the run-off presidential election, defeating Alvaro Delgado of the ruling National Party in a closely contested race. The victory signals the Broad Front’s return to power after a four-year hiatus, with Orsi’s supporters celebrating on the streets of Montevideo, waving the coalition’s iconic red, blue, and white striped flag emblazoned with “FA” for “Frente Amplio.”
Orsi’s win restores the Broad Front’s dominance in Uruguay, which had previously governed the country for 15 years under presidents José Mujica and Tabaré Vázquez. The coalition had lost to Luis Lacalle Pou in 2019, ending its long-standing control of the executive office. However, Lacalle Pou, barred from seeking consecutive terms under Uruguayan law, passed the baton to Delgado, a former veterinarian and key figure in his administration.
Despite public opinion polls showing a dead heat, Orsi surged ahead in Sunday’s vote. Delgado, conceding defeat even before official results were finalized, acknowledged Orsi’s imminent victory in a speech, calling for respect for the electorate’s decision while pledging that his coalition would remain a formidable political force. Outgoing President Lacalle Pou also extended his congratulations to Orsi, committing to a smooth transition of power.
A native of Canelones, Orsi’s political journey began as a history teacher and activist before becoming mayor of his hometown in 2015, a position he retained through re-election in 2020. In his presidential campaign, Orsi prioritized economic reforms, pledging wage increases to enhance purchasing power for low-income workers and proposing expanded early childhood education and youth employment programs. His economic agenda resonated in a country where nearly 25% of children live in poverty, according to a United Nations report.
However, economic issues were not the only concern for voters. Public insecurity dominated discussions, with a survey showing it as the top issue for 29% of respondents. Orsi’s campaign addressed these anxieties with promises to strengthen the police force and improve border security through expanded surveillance.
Orsi’s victory came after a robust first-round showing in October, where he led with 44% of the vote but fell short of the majority needed to avoid a run-off. The final stage saw a tightening race as Delgado gained support from conservative voters, but Orsi’s coalition ultimately prevailed.
In his victory speech, Orsi proclaimed, “The horizon is brightening. The country of freedom, equality, and fraternity triumphs once again.”
