Jaipur, 14 September : union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has said that India is running the world’s largest dam rehabilitation program. Shekhawat gave this information while inaugurating the National Centre for Earthquake Safety of Dams at Malviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) on Thursday.

Shekhawat said that India is the third country in the world with the highest number of dams. There are more than two hundred dams that are more than a hundred years old. He said that India is running the world’s largest dam rehabilitation program. This programme is running on 750 dams. It was during this time that the idea of the need to create a Centre of Excellence for earthquake protection of dams and to prevent other hazards came up. This centre will also study the challenges related to dam safety and prepare experts related to it. This topic will be very favourable globally in the coming years.

Union Minister Shekhawat said that such centres will help in formulating policies and ideal standards for the safety of dams. After the inauguration, the union Minister inspected the centre and inquired about its functioning. On this occasion, Secretary of the Ministry Pankaj Kumar and Director of MNIT Prof. NP Padhi were also present.
