White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan is scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia this week, aiming to engage in discussions with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as part of the United States’ ongoing campaign to foster normalized relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Following a hiatus in normalization talks immediately after the October 7 attack by Palestinian Hamas fighters on southern Israel and Israel’s subsequent military actions targeting Gaza, recent months have seen a resumption of dialogue.
While acknowledging the complexities of the situation, a US official indicated that Sullivan’s meeting with the crown prince primarily serves as a means to assess the current status of the normalization process, though significant progress is not anticipated at this juncture.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a statement on March 21, expressed optimism about the advancements made in talks between the United States and Saudi Arabia regarding the normalization of ties with Israel. However, he refrained from specifying a timeline for reaching a definitive agreement.
Integral to the normalization discussions, Saudi Arabia is seeking to establish a mutual defense pact with Washington and garner US support for its civil nuclear program. These elements underscore the multifaceted nature of the negotiations aimed at forging closer ties between the two nations.
