The White House issued a strong condemnation on Thursday against what it described as “unacceptable” violence perpetrated by Jewish settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. This statement followed a deadly incident in the village of Jit, where one Palestinian was killed and another critically injured.
The National Security Council spokesperson emphasized the need for Israeli authorities to intervene and protect all communities in the West Bank, stating, “Attacks by violent settlers against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank are unacceptable and must stop.” The statement further urged the Israeli government to take decisive measures to prevent such violence and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The violent episode occurred in Jit, a village located west of Nablus, where the Palestinian health ministry reported that a 23-year-old man lost his life, and another individual sustained critical gunshot wounds to the chest. The Israeli military confirmed that a group of “dozens of Israeli civilians, some of them masked,” entered Jit, setting fire to vehicles and structures, and throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails.
In response to the attack, Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the incident, though details of any immediate actions taken by Israeli authorities to address the situation were not provided.
This latest flare-up of violence in the West Bank underscores the ongoing tensions between Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents, a situation that has drawn increasing international concern. The White House’s call for an end to settler violence and for greater protection of Palestinian civilians reflects the broader international pressure on Israel to address these recurring incidents of unrest in the occupied territories.
The incident in Jit adds to a series of violent confrontations in the West Bank, heightening fears of further escalation in the region. The White House’s statement highlights the urgent need for peace and stability, calling on Israeli authorities to take more robust actions to safeguard the lives and rights of all individuals in the area.
