St. John’s, February 2 : The West Indies squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup to be held in South Africa has been announced. Experienced all-rounder Stafanie Taylor has been selected for the squad but her participation will be subject to her passing a fitness test. Taylor is suffering from a back injury and is undergoing treatment in Cape Town. The 15-man squad also includes Shakera Selman, Chinle Henry and Chadian Nation.
Taylor, who captained the West Indies to the T20 World Cup title in 2016, suffered the injury while batting in an ODI against New Zealand in North Sound in September. After which she could not even take part in the home series against England. She was named in the squad for the ongoing tri-series in South Africa but was not fit enough. She has not appeared in T20 Internationals since July 2021.
For the marquee event, the West Indies have also included three members of their recent U-19 World Cup squad – Jada James, Trishan Holder and Jenaba Joseph. All three were called in as injury cover. All three players also featured in West Indies’ final league match against India in the tri-series.
Selector Ann Browne-John said: We are committed to developing women’s cricket, so we feel this is the right time to add three rising under-19 stars to the squad. An arm spinner, Jenaba is a batting all-rounder and Trishan is a powerful striker and wicket-keeping option.
Squad: Hayley Matthews (c), Shemaine Campbelle (vc), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Afi Fletcher, Shabika Gajanabi, Chinelle Henry, Trishan Holder, Jada James, Jinaba Joseph, Chadian Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Shakira Selman, Stephanie Taylor, Rashda Williams.
