Tezpur (Assam) [India], April 15 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa lashed out at the Congress party over its allegations of “democracy in the country being in danger” and said that the party that imposed emergency should not make such statements.

He further said that only Prime Minister Narendra Modi can protect democracy in the country.

“Was India safe under Indira Gandhi? What she did with the Constitution? Congress killed 900 people with bullets since 1979. Operation Blue Star was carried out in Punjab. They insitigated riot against Sikhs in Delhi. These statements don’t suit Congress. The party that imposed emergency, killed Sikhs, Assamese will now talk about democracy?” Sarma told reporters in Tezpur on Monday.

Attacking Congress further, the Assam CM said, “A senior Congress leader had offered Namaz on Eid. We don’t have any objection with that. But the same leader protested against against Pran Pratishtha of Ram Mandir…Congres can love Muslims, but they can’t love Hindus.”

He also slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing her of facilitating influx of migrants and “appeasement politics”.

“If you want to protect democracy in India then vote for Narendra Modi. Only he can protect democracy. Mamata Banerjee has opened the gate for as many Bangladeshis to enter India. What kind of democracy is this? Appeasement is democracy? Not going to Ram Mandir event is democracy? Does democracy means being anti-Hindu,” the Chief Minister added.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to pay a two-day visit to Assam on April 16 and 17. PM Modi will address a mega-election campaign rally at Nalbari in Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency on April 17.

Elections for the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam will take place in three phases on April 19, April 26 and May 7. The counting will take place on June 4. (ANI)
