Virat Kohli has decided to withdraw from the first two Tests in India’s five-match series against England due to personal reasons. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has requested the media and fans to respect Kohli’s privacy and avoid speculating about the reasons behind his decision. The first Test is scheduled to start in Hyderabad this Thursday, followed by the second match in Vizag the next Friday. The series will then take a break before resuming with the third Test in Rajkot on February 15.
BCCI Supports Kohli’s Decision

The BCCI, in its statement, acknowledged Kohli’s commitment to representing India but also recognized the importance of addressing his personal circumstances. “Virat has spoken to captain Rohit Sharma, the team management, and the selectors and has emphasized that while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention,” the BCCI stated. They expressed their confidence in the ability of the remaining squad members to deliver commendable performances in Kohli’s absence.
England’s Preparations and Team Changes
England’s preparations for the series have been somewhat chaotic, with the team arriving in India late on Sunday night, leaving them with a limited time to acclimatize and train. They have chosen Abu Dhabi as their base for preparations. Additionally, Harry Brook has provisionally withdrawn from the series for personal reasons, with Dan Lawrence scheduled to join the squad as his replacement. England faces a dilemma regarding whether to include Lawrence in the playing XI or to adjust the team composition, possibly bringing in Ben Foakes as wicketkeeper.
McCullum and England’s Strategy
England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, remains upbeat about captain Ben Stokes’ fitness, following his recovery from knee surgery. “He looks like a greyhound, he’s stripping fit,” McCullum said, praising Stokes’ work ethic and physical readiness. McCullum also emphasized that England would not deviate from their aggressive playing style, despite facing a formidable Indian team that has an impressive home record. He highlighted the importance of being adaptive in the game, saying, “It’s not rocket science but it will be the nuances of the game, when to stick and when to twist, which will be the fascinating part.” Dan Lawrence’s selection as a replacement for Brook was a decision based on his status as the next in line, reflecting the team’s commitment to selection loyalty.
